Jaguar hybrid is destroying his tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I've thought about if I could find a small enough remote controlled water toy, I'd give him something to chase sometimes. I have lots of big crystals and shells, some small stones for when he decides to redecorate. I should try my cat's laser light toy with him, see if he'll chase a laser dot. He has a history of destroying tanks. That's how he ended up at a lfs. I knew about it when I got him and set it up for him to be able to rearrange it easily. Just wish, he'd leave the filter tubes alone.

One simple thing many have used in ping pong balls. You could let one float and put hole in one so it sinks. Alot of cichlids seem to like them and they are cheap so its worth a shot

The problem with Jags& ping pong balls is that a big Jag can easily fit one in it's mouth.
So, be sure that it can't wrap it's mouth around the ball.

Didnt think about that but some places sell balls alot like ping pong balls that are bigger. Could also try wiffle ball or those cheap plastic baseballs. I know mines favorite toy seem to be his large piece of driftwood that her moves all over the tank. just a thought If he likes to kill heaters and filter inlets u may want to look into a sump filter so u can put ur heater in the sump and it will get rid of the filter intakes.

I don't know much about sump filters. I use 2 emporer 400's and they do a good job of dealing with his mess. I would like to keep a scavenger with him, but don't know what he would get along with. Would have to be a big one. I would like to find a 4 line cat somewhere, but no one where I lives has them. So far the heater and filters still working fine. I hung 2 crystals on fishing line over one of the top supports and he will take them and knock them against the glass sometimes, mostly when I sleep late and don't feed him at his regular 5:30 am time.

Yea they can be pushy if they dont get their way. That is also what makes them so cool.

BTW what temp do you keep your tank @. I didnt even think about.it but keeping them more toward their cooler temp range can also help calm them down a bit. For instance.my jag is crazy with the temp near 80° but around 75° hes not as bad. This can also help them to accept tankmates, not in all cases but does work somtimes.

I think the tank is set for 76 degrees. I can't get near the heater to check the setting and the thermometer floats all over the place. I don't have central heat in my house and at the time when I got the heater, the temp in my living rm was 38 degrees. I was concerned about him getting too cold, he's too expensive to lose like that. As far as dither fish, I don't think a 75 gallon tank really has room for anything like that at the moment. I couldn't even keep a pleco without it being chased. I want to move him into a 125 or 150, maybe then I can get a big roommate for him. I'd love to get a bay snook or dovii, but I know better than to try it. Jag is probably too territorial to allow it. Maybe a nice peaceful Oscar. I can always find a good sized one of those.

Then again, Oscars aren't always that peaceful! Probably something fast that can at least attempt to out run. I've toyed with the idea of a school of giant danios, just to see what he would do to them. Might make lunch out of them, kind of like "fast food" for fish. He eats jumbo sized tetra pellets now. I am attempting to start a breeding pair of jewels, they might make good feeders for jag or my brother's grouper.
