Hi, my name's David KOYAMA and I can assure you that Japanese people are just as 'showy' as anyone else. Sometimes in different ways, but it's a huge part of the culture to note one's statis in one way or another. .:)

Thanks for that input David, i can see that as being true. I guess my perspective as an outsider is what i based my opinions on. It just seems to me that generally speaking, the culture doesn't seem to flaunt as much, but again i am a foreigner living in japan so thats just what i see. Is it a safe assumption David that by your last name you are of japanese desent? or am i totally of base?

islander>>>>isn't it amazing how the same things in both cultures can be sooo different? Like flower arrangement. I can't stand how flower arrangement is done usually in this culture (American). And pottery is very different, too. While it seems that pottery in the US is 'perfect when it's smooth with no 'blemishes', in the culture of a nihongo, it's very important to have uniqueness and characture. Know what I mean?

Yes, I'm japanese.

My japanese name is Koyama Daisuke.

Yes it is amazing. And although i dont know anything about flower arrangment or pottery, what you just pointed out is very evident. I think too what is interesting is the history behind a cultures perspective of beauty. i think the japanese culture is a beatiful one, and sadly I am leaving here soon.

Sorry for getting slightly of topic.

This culture difference happens in many things; not just aquariums. Mostly pride for the cultural tradition keeps the tradition of small tanks, IMO. Of course the idea of what's beautiful to the culture is also there, like you said. Shoot, look at the Bonsai!

Sorry to everyone. I didn't mean to take over the thread. But I need to leave anyway. Thanks for letting me post my opinion.

As for me, I don't care for habitat conditions for the fish except for what I get out of it. I keep my discus under as little stress as possible so they lay eggs. I keep my monsters in a large tank so they won't stunt. I don't really care about their rights. I've eaten way more fish than I've owned. The only reason I think species should not be extinct, is so people can experience living with them. truthfully, I think that many are this way, but can't admit it to themselves. I do have compassion, just not life altering compassion. they're just fish. I have flushed many, because I didn't like them, too! As far as never being in as good as place as nature....In nature there are many preditors. (Sometimes in tanks, too!) But really, many are taken care of in safer conditions than they would live in in nature. So there's my two bits.:)

That's probably the most honest/true post I have ever read. It certainly does apply to me

it is honest. It is straighforward. It does not apply to me , however, neither, I want to believe, to most keepers. Fish ( as all animals ) are no comodities.

With that I will never agree.

Although no one is doubting Japanese knowledge their perception of stocking is a little skew. I do not agree with overstocking to the point of no free movement is ludacris. I found this picture of 2 Arapaima Gigas (grow in excess of 8ft!!) along with 3 oscars, 2 arrowanas, a red tail cat fish and a blob which I can't make out. In terms of health and colour they look phenomenal, in terms of free, natural movement it is rubbish!

I don't disagree with a little overstocking i.e Malawis with appropriate filtration and space but I think Japanese style is lost on me.
