Although no one is doubting Japanese knowledge their perception of stocking is a little skew. I do not agree with overstocking to the point of no free movement is ludacris. I found this picture of 2 Arapaima Gigas (grow in excess of 8ft!!) along with 3 oscars, 2 arrowanas, a red tail cat fish and a blob which I can't make out. In terms of health and colour they look phenomenal, in terms of free, natural movement it is rubbish!

I don't disagree with a little overstocking i.e Malawis with appropriate filtration and space but I think Japanese style is lost on me.

I would not consider this an example of the tanks and type of stocking we were debating. This is, as you put it, ludicrous and evil. The Pimas won't even be able to turn.

The type of tank you showed is much more an example of the awfull tanks one finds in Chinese restaurants in China ( where respect for animal life is fragmentary at best ) than the ones that go under the title of "Japanese Style"

Imo, at least

Exactly. Now tell me that this tank is not better than 75% of the tanks we see, in terms of space ( the thing is about a man's height ?!?), water "looks" and fish appearance ??

THis tank is a tribute to a very competent fishkeeper, imo.:)

it is honest. It is straighforward. It does not apply to me , however, neither, I want to believe, to most keepers. Fish ( as all animals ) are no comodities.

With that I will never agree.

So the care you give your pets aren't for the purpose of your enjoyment? That's hard for me to understand...

yes, it is.

However, when my enjoyment ceases, I do not flush the pets. And I do care about the conditions they live in, about the habitat I impose them..

In that sense, they are no commodities.

As for me, I don't care for habitat conditions for the fish except for what I get out of it. ...... I don't really care about their rights. ...... The only reason I think species should not be extinct, is so people can experience living with them. ........truthfully, I think that many are this way, but can't admit it to themselves. I do have compassion, just not life altering compassion. they're just fish. I have flushed many, because I didn't like them, too! ...... So there's my two bits.:)

It is as honest and straightforward as they come. And so is your post in agreement, and for that both of you deserve credit, in my book.

Beyond that, I won't even discuss or debate your views in fishkeeping, so apart they are from mine.

You yourself suggested, Senor, that people should try to discus this issue without heat and flaming etc..
:(

I'm sorry you see it that way Miguel. What I had stated was that I was somewhat venting, and with venting comes a certain degree of heat, but heat can be kept from turning into fire and flaming by not singling any members out because when the screen names start flying threads get closed.

But as far as my statement goes I don't think it was overboard and it was brought to mind by a statemt made by another member, not somwhere I had originaly intented the conversation to go.

I never considered your post to be "overboard"..was just a change of direction in the debate...anyway, I'm off. Have an early morning tomorrow..

Lets see what gives tomorrow, when the US of A starts posting......

Good night!:)

No it seems that instead it's just a power trip for those people, something to show off."How much money worth of fish can I stuff in one tank?".For some people Its like their Bling Bling or something.

I've noticed myself a more stocked tank is a more active tank but I don't think it's a bling bling thing. The more colors you add to a tank obviously the more colorful it is. And some love dats. And some love arows. And some love so many they want to mix them together. and if the fish has turning room and signifigant filtration/fish are in good health I see nothing wrong with that.

This board is unlike alot of others because on others 10,000 people would have said that tank I posted a video to is horrible. So if you're looking for it to happen I don't think it's going to. I don't speak for everyone but I think most here are fine with the "overfiltrated/a little overstocked but still have room to move" tanks. Stocking is not a rule but a mere suggestion and not everyone stocks fish to try and recreate their enviroment. Almost no one does, or they do and do a sucky job at it. Because well, you can't recreate the wild in even a 8' glass box.

This culture difference happens in many things; not just aquariums. Mostly pride for the cultural tradition keeps the tradition of small tanks, IMO. Of course the idea of what's beautiful to the culture is also there, like you said. Shoot, look at the Bonsai!

This remark has merit. The eastern style of keeping fish can be different from its western counterparts. Both have its pros and cons ... I am somewhat in the middle because frankly, i am a mixture of both cultures.

All i can say is always give respect to your fellow fish keepers. People might have different styles of keeping fish but that doesnt give them the right to bash or disrespect their fellow hobbyist. A little tolerance and maturity goes a long way. In the end , were all from the same side.. Think about it.
