To me before you can debate on the subject. One has to define what they percieve as a Japanese style tank first. The pic with the Arapaima can not be classed as a japanese style tank IMO.I think that would be classed as wrong in any nationalities standard.(as far as fish enthusiest/hobbiest goes)
The other tank I have posted is how I percieve a Japanese style tank to be.While some will say overcrowded straight off the bat, I see it as beauty, well cared for fish and I give credit to the aquariest in achieving that.
Before anyone puts down this guys tank, lets take the time to think about this guys experience, knowlage as a fish keeper.Maybe he has tried with less fish and overstocking has proven to stop aggression time and time again and that is why he/she has chosen this route?

His basic specs on this tank as posted.Compare filtration size to tank size.

Tank size : 1800 x 900 x 600 (WLH mm)
Filter is overflow and overhead;
overflow: 450 x 350 x 550 dry filter tank and 1200 x 600 x 450 wet filter tank
overhead : 1200 mm wide

IMO these fish are better of than most fish in understocked tanks with lesser filtration and water quality.Personally,I believe there is alot to be learnt from there methods but they will never share there knowlage if the first thing we do is knock them on how many fish they keep in one tank.:)

I agree, the pic w/ the pirarucu probably doesnt occur very often in home aquaria in japan so i think would be wrongly classified as a japanese tank. Does anyone have any text to go with the pic? for all we know it could be a picture showing how NOT to house an arapaima.

I didn't get a chance to read through all the post...too lazy. But here's my 2 cents. I agree...I don't understand how someone can have a 75g tank with a 2' Jardini in it and a bunch of people go crazy and tell the guy that "He needs a bigger tank!" or "You should be more responisble and get it a bigger tank!" But if someone says, "Here's my 2' Asian Arowana in my 75g Japanese Style tank" People go gaga over it. I'm not sure if it's because it's an Asian Arowana or because it's "Japanese Style" but it seems that it gets support. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Some "Japanese style" tanks are almost okay, the ones I'm talking about are the grossly overstocked as defined by myself on page 6 :)

I had already read this post.Infact the thread.By stating "some Japanese style tanks are almost okay"Shows just how much personal opinion comes into it.What you, I or anyone else finds exceptable will all be different. It is a matter of where you draw the line. That line will be different for all.:)

The pic I posted fits your last description.e.g.
-when someone has a very large tank and their fish can turn around without hitting the glass but not without hitting each other.:)

yes thats all it is,my personal opinion, and others as they've stated theirs.I never claimed it to be fact, so of course it's only opinion :D

no but if you took a few out they could...maybe that makes it almost okay, its not as bad as some Ive seen. This whole time I have (and will continue to) refrained from posting any pics of what I'm talking about for a few reasons such as not having someone come out of nowhere with "hey thats my tank!"

let us hear more from you guys...tons of guys in here with "well stocked " tanks...

well if you look at the old school rule of fishkeeping in some old books they tell you that it ok to keep 1inch of fish per UK gal if thats the case im well under stocked :D

with some of the fish people are keeping now the only way to make it work is to pack them in

i feel as long as the fish has plenty of room to turn around and you are providing very good water conditions its not a problem

what you do have to take into consideration is the adult size of ALL of the fish in the tank
