jus added a breeding pair of convicts

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well today I also added a mated pair(proven pair they should spawn within the next week) of convicts(2-3") in with my 3 RBPs(6-7"). After a couple hours the cons now own the tank and the RBPs won't eat. Note the uneaten smelt at the bottom of the tank.

let the ps settle back n feel comfy with them around. my ps did snatch a bite out the tail of the male. now they just flare at eachother. hopein to see some babies. thinkin i mite try a different pair(proven pair).

Its funny how , such a small fish can punk a fish with the ability to shred it to peices, but hearing u say your ''P''s r stressed out and wont eat, why do that to your piranha, i like the idea of breading convic's for their fry, but not to the point of my ''real'' fish being harmed , by stress and not eating..

Oh I agree, If they don't eat within the next day or two I'll pull the cons, a hungry RBP is very dangerous and could end up loosing one to cannibalism.

I say leave the piranhas, let them go hungry. Piranhas can go for quite a long time without food.

You are right there my friend. And if you leave the cons in long enough, i bet you the piranhas will do as expected. The hunger will get to them, believe me, seen it so many times over. In order to keep 'other fish' with piranhas, the piranhas need to be well fed. If the 'other fish' won’t let the piranhas feed and be well fed, be patient and get the pop corn ready.

problem is the RBP's may take one of there own instead of the convicts. 20 or so years ago I had my first RBP tank with 6 5-6" RBP and 3 4-5" tin foil barbs in a 55 gallon(can we say overcrowded) anyway we went on a 2 week vacation and the person I set up to take care wouldn't go buy feeders only would feed flakes. well I came back to a tank with 4RBPs and 2 tin foils.

That's a pretty cool idea. I hope they all survive...well...except for the fry since they're feeders. lol

This thread inspired me to put some cons into my altuvei tank. Well when I first put them in they went straight for a cave that I have in there. Within an hour or so, they were out exploring and everything seemed at peace. So I took a nap...and when I woke up I had 1 con tail + 1 con head  It wasn't a complete surprise but man I still hoped it'd work out

you gotta give the cons more then just a cave if there gonna be with preditors. give them a full structure. i have over 10 rocks stack n piled up creating over how many different "caves" for them to give them more places to run/pop out/hide. my cons are still good and alive, i know its only been about 10 days, but my cons are fine. if you want, you can do what i did. i added my buttikofri to the tank aswell. gives the piranhas more to worry about, weird thing is all my P's eat perfectly fine. my p's, butti, and my cons all eat together durring feeding. i have everyone eating pellets. no babies yet but no deaths either.
