k1 kaldness

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Any craft/fabric store will have the mesh/screen. Be prepared for them to react like you are asking about alien technology if you memtion anything to do with an aquarium. The screen is there. Cheap as well.

I use Mattala that is sold at Pond Stores to contain my K1. It doesn't seem to clog and is pretty rigid. I think i paid 60 or 70 bucks for a large sheet so not super cheap. Good luck.

just an update.. been a week since i ordered from kens. he only shipped half my order. i called him to see whats going on with my air pump. its the only thing missing from the order. on another no there is some k1 already moving about in the sump with the really low flow pump. to "help with the bacteria additive i put about 6 -10 lbs of ceramic media at the bottom of the k1 chamber. hopefully the bacteria will spread a bit better with more bacteria present in the tank.

Ken doesn't reply in my experience. He either ships fast or just refunds your money.

well, its just so happens i bought a used air pump from some guy. the pump is eocp268. according to this this runs 60+ liters (dont know exact number) per minute. so i tried using it past 2 days. and i definitely noticed better movement, but not enough. I dont know the exact number of media i have but it should be around the ball park, but its still not moving the media really... so i think its my air bars. they are flexible microbubble wands... i think im going to make an air line from pvc like mike did... and silicone it to a tile.hopefully this will make this work better. i have other methods of creating more movement but this will be the first step to solving the problem. only issue now is making the exact size air bars.

Under the guidance of some awesome fish friends, aka mike scott and jay i have some updates. in a few hours im going to put a air bar i made out of pvc. Today i will go to walmart and buy supplies for to make an algae scrubber. it will be placed in the input chamber of my sump to reduce nitrates. Then will be looking into a Fully housed filter for my house to incorperate a drip system without needing a dechlorinator. just need to find out how to do it.

thanks mike! from what i can tell, i believe my air supply is still inefficient. i think i have too much media in the sump currently. also may have not enough air pumping though. the air bar works, but air does not flow through evenly though the holes though they are all drilled the same size and evenly distributed. 2 cubic feet of k1 is about 120+ liters... i took about 2 5 gallon buckets worth of media out and myu 60-68 lpm pump still cant produce enough air to move the media effectively. So currently i am looking at other methods of moving the media including the air... i am currently thinking about creating a large external Biotower. the biotower will be a wet dry system that will drip water into the moving bed filter media chamber though the center to allow more water movement. I may also put a larger air pump on it but probably not. I will create a diagram and display it to let you guys know what im creating. The reason why i am thinking of making the extra biotower is because of 3 main reasons.

1. I have attempted stingrays 3 times so far. this is the third time. the first time was a mistate underestimating the bioload of a stingray. the second was because my municipal water had over .5 ammonia coming straight out of the tap. this third one is done carefully so i have no causualties as of yet and i dont plan on anymore.
2. switched from the wet dry system to a moving bed system, so i have alot of pot scrubbies, bioballs, and ceramic media laying around. i fell as they are going to waste if i dont use them.
3. by creating another bio tower i can have more experience with building acrylic and also pretty much allows me to seed new tanks if needed pretty much on the go.

My plan is to buy a single 8x4 foot acrylic sheet (i will ask the company to cut for me). and create a 1'x1'x3' tower holding all my lefover pot scrubbies and bioballs. I plan on splitting off the output of the sump and having one end go to my tank and another end go to the biotower. the bottom of the biotower will have a pipe leading the the moving bed filter k1 chamber to improve movement of the k1. everything would be build from things i can buy easily from lowes (except the acrylic).

I would like some feedback to this idea as any feedback will help me greatly. thanks!

Mike! i will definitely let you know! can you give me an approximation of how much money was spent creating the drip system?

I think part of your problem is that your entrance to the PVC frame is on one side instead of the middle like mine

Because I don't think it was shared and because I'm setting up a k3 bed, would you guys mind sharing what you did and the pump used?
