Usually it's illegal to keep them alive. You need a special permit to have thme in a tank. A fishing permit only allows you to catch and kill....even it they are "of size".
That's why it's important to check state laws, but not all states are that way.
I have wildcaught longears, largemouth bass, bullhead, green sunfish, checkered madtom, shadow bass, all in my tank legally just with a fishing permit.
The Missouri Conservationist even advocates seining for native fish to keep in your home aquarium
http://mdc.mo.gov/conmag/2002/01/50.htm (Though I disagree with some of the aquarium care guide)
In fact anything that is considered "other fish" (non-game fish, non-endagered fish, non-protected fish, or anything that doesn't have other specialy outlined regulations for that species, and certain waterways might have specific regulations) can be caught with sein, dip net, or cast net; this includes but is not limited to:
Longear, pumpkinseed,
green sunfish and bluegill (these must be released if over 5 inches and not caught by hook and line), most species of minnows and darters, some sculpin, some madtom, most darters....Well you get the idea.
I do realize we have more lenient laws than many states, but plenty of states let you keep certain wildcaught fish in aquariums assuming you just have a fishing permit and catch them legally.
