Yep, that's exactly the fish there are in my canal. A bunch too. But they don't bite. I have yet to find good bait for them.

In early to late May, last year, mated pairs were still defending their nest areas. This was in Ft Lauderdale area. I caught several pairs by jigging a white curly tail grub directly across the nesting site. usually a pocket in the riprac of the bridge we were under. I pretty much bounced the jig right off their noses.

Try feeding them bread (no hooks or tackle). Also try cut shrimp. When you find what they will eat, then start adding small hooks :naughty:

My neighbor have wild fish in his aquarium. He have pike, perch and american catfish. It very nice look, but had problems with live food.

What no BB's in the bread so you can use a magnet to catch them? :screwy:

guppy you didn't catch them, you ticked them off so much they bit the bait...but hey it worked.

Usually it's illegal to keep them alive. You need a special permit to have thme in a tank. A fishing permit only allows you to catch and kill....even it they are "of size".

That's why it's important to check state laws, but not all states are that way.

I have wildcaught longears, largemouth bass, bullhead, green sunfish, checkered madtom, shadow bass, all in my tank legally just with a fishing permit.
The Missouri Conservationist even advocates seining for native fish to keep in your home aquarium http://mdc.mo.gov/conmag/2002/01/50.htm (Though I disagree with some of the aquarium care guide)

In fact anything that is considered "other fish" (non-game fish, non-endagered fish, non-protected fish, or anything that doesn't have other specialy outlined regulations for that species, and certain waterways might have specific regulations) can be caught with sein, dip net, or cast net; this includes but is not limited to:
Longear, pumpkinseed, green sunfish and bluegill (these must be released if over 5 inches and not caught by hook and line), most species of minnows and darters, some sculpin, some madtom, most darters....Well you get the idea.

I do realize we have more lenient laws than many states, but plenty of states let you keep certain wildcaught fish in aquariums assuming you just have a fishing permit and catch them legally.

2/3 of my fish are wild caught.
and i have around 75 fish
:D
and most of the time there better then lfs.
;)
