Largest fish for a 55 gallon?

Firemouth, severum, or salvini, would probobly work, there are lots more cichlids to choose from but it depends on what you want as far as attitude , size, ect. Everyone has different opinions which fish needs a certain tank size but nothing is written in stone.

Edit; okay, I'm sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, it probably is. Here comes the noob side of me - could you do a JD AND a Salvini in the 55 w/red tail shark?
 
Maybe a pair of parrot fish, my girlfriends mother has 4 in a 50 gal community tank, in the 4 years weve been together I havnt seen much growth in them. There about 4" each id say. Very good personality and fun to watch.

It is not a stupid question but space wise yes you could, there would probably be aggression issues from the Jack and salvini because of space but who knows they might be fine it is hard to tell. You will also need more maintenance if you keep the 2. You will probably have a more enjoyable experience with 1 IMO.
