I have never kept a electric blue dempsey but from what I heard they seem to be difficult, a regular dempsey would be alot easier.

Go for the regular jack demp. In any event, mixing any cichlid at any time is a dicey affair, you really never know what the outcome will be. Could be good, could be bad - ya just never really know, as aggression can be so varied in between individuals.

I'll do lots of research, of course. Are they harder to keep than a regular JD?

You could do a ckf but make sure that the fish you already are at least 3 inches
