Leaking tank please help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Rubbing alcohol is a good idea to remove traces of oil left by fingerprints, etc. but it doesn't actually remove silicone from glass. The only fluid that does that is elbow grease.

Use alcohol by all means to get the glass ready for new silicone AFTER you have manually removed all the old.

Thank you two so much for the advice and help I was freaking out and my mom and dad have absolutely no faith in me actually doing this successfully but as long as I do what I’m told by you guys I know it’ll come together like new. Taking a break from it for the night. Also I can’t get the top brace off. Any advice on that

Do yourself a favour after you have sorted this drama and learn how to cut glass if you decide to get serious about the hobby. You will be able to make internal tank patches, sliding lids, your own tanks (large & small) and custom filters.

Cheap or unwanted glass can be found in lots of places. Pretty soon you will have a few hundred tanks (if you want). I had around 200 when I was eleven years old.

Silicone for “gluing” the glass panes needs silicone adhesive not silicone sealant for large tanks, like GE Momentiv RTV100 Series silicone. It’s much stronger than GE silicone I, curing time for gluing should be at least 2 weeks.
Bonding vs sealing....this applies to aircraft as well.

Good luck with this. I hope that you get things sorted out. If you lived near me I would just give you one of the tanks that I have laying around.

For disassembling tanks, I usually use leather gloves, razor blades, and fishing line. Acetone works best for dissolving and cleaning off old silicone.

I feel like some have encouraged a full rebuild of this tank without mentioning a lot of the work that comes with it. Ime a reseal is not difficult, but actually building a tank is somewhat more. You're gonna need some more tools and materials to build a quality tank. Research and planning at this stage is a must for you.

First thing I would do is build some proper stands for your tanks. That table setup is cringeworthy lol
