Import cars tend to be more efficient when it comes to displacement, but they are more complex engines with variable valve timing and other gadgets that make more power with less cylinders. American hosre power has traditionally been to have the biggest engine you can fit under the hood with less focus on efficiency. For example the 2014 Dodge viper has a 8.4liter V10 that produces 640hp which is pretty weak for that amount of engine imo. Now a 2014 Nissan GTR has a 3.4liter twin turbo that produces 545hp. The Viper runs a 3.4 second 0-60mph with a 11.6 second 1/4mile while the GTR runs a 10.9 second 1/4 mile stock with a 2.8 0-60mph. The GTR also gets 23mpg highway while the Viper gets 19mpg.
Point is the Japanese and other countries have found greater efficiency in their engines, you see it in racing as well. not to say America's not catching up.
You could easily take a 4 cylinder like a STI or supra and drop serious dinero into it, throw slicks on it and run 7-10second quarter miles all day and the best part is these cars also handle better! Here's a 6.4 second quarter mile supra http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=O0faiWSBXTo
But nothing beats the sound of american 2000+hp!

Also if you must. Factor in cost, maintenance, and reliability(price to fix breakdowns).. Also to say a GTR handles better than a viper? Only In the hands of an average driver but, someone skilled I'd take the viper all day around the track.. How many vipers race in different classes compared to GTRs?
Also horsepower numbers can be deceiving.. Peak horsepower is only part of it. The power curve is just as important if not more.. You may have a 4cyl. Produce 600-700hp @ 8-10k rpm but, what is it doing at 3-4k? Maybe half that if lucky? Now a V8 may produce 500hp @ 6k rpm yet at 3-4k rpm is producing more hp than the 4cyl. Couple that with the more torque from displacement and the v8 is dusting a more powerful car before the 4cyl. Can catch it.
