Lets talk sumps!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am going to draw up another design I have been toying with and I will post it later this evening. I went out to the workshop and layed some board around and the sump is almost as long as the inside of the tank. I am still leaning toward using filter socks. Filter socks seem to be more effective then a prefilter pad on top of a drip plate. I am considering bring in water from each end through filter socks and moving the pump to the center. This would really simplify my plumbing!

Where did you get this info about different bacteria growing on different types of media?

Link?

I'll have to go find it. It was some old thread from a guy that ran the filtration dept for a bunch of LFS in Europe. He had all kinds of good stuff in there regarding every type of media & biofilter setup you can think of, all with references, specs and personal experience. I'll post the link as soon as I find the thread.

Cool. Good lookin out.

I just sifted through like 60 pages of search results! My eyes hurt... I still didnt manage to find the thread & I have to head home, but I'll look again tomorrow. I hope it was on MFK! I'm starting to think maybe the guy just had the world's longest post in somebody else's thread..? It was so long ago when I read it that I just cant remember enough details to narrow it down quickly... He went over everything you can think of, from all the different media types available to sumps to w/d to fluidized beds to some kind of bacteria house, etc. & then went on to list all their cycling times & traits. Gosh I hope this rings a bell with someone.

OK, here we go again. I have changed the sump so each of my overflows enters a different on of the sump. Once in the sump the water willfirst pass through filter socks and then rise onto a drip plate and onto a bed of scrubbies. The scrubbies on each side measure 28"x22"x12" so I may thin those out a bit and add a set of trays for other filter media. I have also moved the sump to the center. Well, whatcha think?

this would be supermans sump if he had a fish tank

Looks good. I like it. I'm assuming though that this is not perfectly to scale but I shall throw a little side note out there anyway, your second baffle which spills on to the scrubbies drip plate seems to be a bit high to where the water level while running will be above the top of the filter socks if they are to be supported by the flat part in the first section of the sump thus allowing water to go around the sock and not create a 100% flow though.

Yes, I see what you are saying. No, it's not to scale. When I am building this thing I will pay closer attention to the way the water will flow and the overflows. I need to be sure that 2nd wall section is lower then the overflow comming from the filter socks.
