They are still brightly patterned until around 10 to 14 inches. He's feeding on Tetra Jumbomin there.. Seems to be his favorite out of the prepared stuff.
it's looking great man! what is his total length now?
Roughly around 5 inches, About an inch bigger than back in April. He'd likely be much bigger by now but I had to get him to overcome that skittish behavior before he started eating very well. He is now acting like a typical gator at feeding time but still is a bit jumpy. He is sharing a tank with a breeding pair of Polypterus delhezi right now and this is in my living room so this has calmed his behavior a bit.

richards backround goes much deeper than just gar! he's a very impressive fish keeper...
kara and i have very big plans, but we need to get more space to allow us to expand our tanks to the level required to house a gator. it's in our future plans for sure though.
nice looking gar, great markings,im not 100% sure but i could've sworn seein a fishin show where they were cstchin gator gars in texas, and they were absolutely huge

yea i just realized that richard knew alot about all predators aside from just gar. cuz i was looking at primitivefishes.com and realized that it is solomons website. BTW nice site solomon.
from the posts you and kara have posted. you both seem very educated fish keepers as well. (yall helped me out alot with my gars) anyways looking foward to seeing your future gator.

I keep lots of stuff aside from Gar..Gar are just my personal favorite and the fish I spend a great deal of time and effort on.. My first fish was a Longnosed Gar and I've always keep and researched gar since.
I have been working with many other species for many years now including Lampreys, Polypterids, lungfishes, Sturgeons, Killifishes, Livebearers and Trichomycterid (Candiru) Catfish..As well as Native NA Cyprinids which are second to Gar in my interest.. I have been working with Phoxinus and Clinostomus Dace species and various Notropis shiners for over a decade now...and no these are not feeders...
I also work with several Native NA herps and in the past specialized in Chameleons, Monitors and Venomous snakes in the genus Crotalus and Sisterus.. I'm currently working on several biogeography and natural history projects working with Necturus (Mudpuppies) as well as Abystomid salamanders professionally.
I think I should however change Breeding pair of P.delhezi to something like...
Two attracted to each other and interested in a hook up fish...They are regularly showing courtship behavior and we will see in time as they mature just how well this will work out. In the past I have spawned P. ornatipinnis, P.palmas polli and P. senagalus.. Never tried P. delhezi and this is my first crack at it. We will know this winter if all goes well with these two...
