Interest at a young age for animals / pets can turn into a want to learn more about them. It is that knowledge and love at a young age that turns into many respectable and informed owners.

Surprised nobody has closed this. Stupid thread.
I'm guilty of a few less than necessary threads myself but really furious?
This is insane! Your a kid right now (so am I at 14) so you should know better than anyone that they have the capacity to be responsible with animals. You sound like the pettiest person on the site right now.
"13 year olds shouldn't be allowed to date." Says the 14 year old.
In this case, "Young kids shouldn't have big pets." Says the barely older young kid.

I am only thirteen and yet I make enough money from breeding and selling my fish to have a breeding trio of zebra pieces. So you can't go on saying that all kids are irresponsible, cause its not true. I have lots of friends who make their own money to support their hobbies. I am currently in the process of designing a multi thousand gallon pond, not cause I have fish that are too big for my tanks but because I love fish and want to expand my hobby. And I will be paying for the majority of it with my own money.

Disagree. Most "kids" I know are more responsible with their fish/pets than most of the adults I know, unfortunately. It all falls on parenting especially if the parents are buying the tank and fish. About 13 seconds and a Google search will give the parent all the info they need.

Yeah, let's put a law in place so parents don't have to parent at all. You're essentially saying, lets pay someone else(government) to regulate our kids so we don't have to.

Better education from retailers and parents, sure. A law..... No.

I agree, kids aren't that iresponsible.

hello. i read your post and can honestly say i am offended. i have an account on the arachnoboards, and keep a red tail boa, emperor scorpion, Hottentotta hottentotta (scorpion), chaco golden knee, scolopendra polymorpha, and i had a crested gecko, scolopendra subspinipes, ethmostigmus sp., rhopalurus junceus, vaejovis spinigerus, and a couple others. i pay for every animal and all the food. on a daily basis i spend my time caring after them. i am looking at getting some fish and just got an account here in order for questions and such. i am a teen and a very responsible one at that. dont judge underage keepers because youve seen one or two kids.

As someone who entered this hobby at a young age, and joined Monster Fish Keepers at the age of twelve, I agree with you 100%. If you are determined to do something enough, you will do it. Do not ever let anyone discourage you on this forum, or anywhere else. :)

To the author of this thread:

I disagree with your position entirely.

While there have been children who have obtained monster fish in the past, only to have them released in the wild when their interest in them fades, it is more likely that an adult will release a large fish, or any other species of fish into the wild. Yet, I have not seen you make an argument in that position. There are, after all, more adult fish keepers in the hobby, than there are children who are in the hobby. Furthermore, parents purchase many useless items for their children such as XBOX, or Wii, and their child sits in front of a tv for many hours of the day, while using a tv the child most likely did not buy, and not learning how to appreciate life, or nature itself. And what happens when a child tires of the electronics? The fill our land fields, only adding to a problem.

It is a good thing; a wonderful thing to be able to buy fish, or any other animal for your child, and raise them to love and adore animals. If you find your child in the position of not having an interest in animals, you did not fail as a parent, but at least you attempted to have your child appreciate something other than electronics.

Additionally, there are many other alternatives, than to release a pet in the wild. Many small pet stores will take them, and there are always people who love and adore pets, who want more pets.

Moreover, this site was created with the thought in mind of educating people about large, predatory fish, the aquarium hobby in general, while welcoming people of all ages so that more people in the world can be educated about fish. The more people who are interested in fish, the more likely it will be that endangered fish species such as the asian arowana will not go extinct, and will be around for future generations to enjoy.

As a person who is staunchly against HR669, I am firmly opposed to any laws governing children, or any person not being able to have the fish that they desire.

I would like to mention that I am quite offended by this, considering I have been raised around fish my entire life. My father had an aquarium, and it led me to become interested in fish. I joined this forum when I was twelve years old, and I worked hard when I was that young for the aquariums, and necessities that I needed for my fish. Any child who has a strong to desire to keep fish, will most likely have a strong desire to keep them permanently.
