Its always enlightening reading the comments posted on those stories....

What kind of idiot "plays" with a gaboon viper?? And if he WAS stoned or drunk or something, that makes him even more of an idiot.

I do agree that there should be a permit required to own HOT's, in every state. They are not for everyone, and if you really are willing to take the time and put in the training to get the permit, then you're more likely to handle the snake correctly. Buying it "because its a gaboon viper and its freaking cool" is not a good reason...

^ thats what I was thinking, hmm didn't know you could play with a viper, guess he didn't win. When something like this happens I can't imagine insurance covering it. Is this guy in my a couple grand now in hospitalo bills... I hope?

I feel exactly the same way. Another thing is the price. I was at the Hamburg Reptile Show over the weekend and I could have bought a 4 foot Western Diamondback for $50 bucks! I understand there isn't a great demand for hots so the prices run cheap but come on. Maybe if the prices were higher not everyone would be so quick to make an impulse buy. And like you said, if you did your research and got the permit you would be more than happy to pay a higher price.

dangit! I just left this nice long comment on it but now it is not showing up.

anyways, i agree with the permitting method and I feel that FL has the best system out there at the moment.

wait, found the comment:

"I hate it when stories like this one pop up. As a fellow venomous snake keeper, I dread hearing of some idiot that gets bit and makes the news. This man should have never been allowed to own anything venomous but that does not mean that no one is capable of keeping them safely. In FL, where I am from, in order to obtain a "hot" or venomous snake, you need to get a permit that requires you to have 1000 hours of documented hands on training, 2 letters of recommendation from others carrying the permit and a bi annual inspection of the cages and premises. I feel that this is sufficient to allow anyone that really wants to keep a hot snake to do so but also weed out the idiots like this one.

All I am saying is please do not judge venomous snake keepers with a knee jerk response like banning the importation of "dangerous or venomous snakes". Most of us are very responsible and take great care to never let anything happen with our animals or anyone else."

Did you catch the "sr" after his name. The idiot has bred already.
