So it’s a case of a female being stubborn by not laying eggs and the male refusing to let her go until she does?

I think sometimes a female get trapped when she has no eggs to lay or maybe she refuses to lay for the male...either way no eggs, no escape....if a female is trapped for 3 days it would be wise to help get her out as it’s unlikely she will lay for him. Sometime I think the female can sustain too much damage from the male and pads of injuries as well...I was told breeding plecos is not romantic and sometimes not for the faint of heart

With bristlenose, getting a good pair is key. With a good pair you can have open ended pipes and still they will lay, time after time, with no risk.
Getting that pair...... mmmm not so easy.
