Lyonsi tank mates?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One thing I will add about robertsoni is they are very slow growing. But once they get there they are amazing. I've had this girl for 7 years.

That sounds awesome.

You'll love the robertsoni. That blue is so intense and really stands out. They don't hide and are't shy.

I am going to have a very long wait for my other two to grow, because they are only 2".

Your experience may be different than mine--all fish are different. But, here is my experience with Lyonsi in a 125 gallon 3 years ago?

Don't put Lyonsi in that tank with all those plants. At some point, Lyonsi will decide they're toys and just start ripping them up, pulling on them, and making a total mess out of the tank.

Lyonsi are thick, strong fish, they like to swim pretty fast, and they get mean. I wouldn't try one in a 125 again. Mine decided to dig a big nest in the middle of the tank, and nothing could swim from one side of the tank to the other anymore.

Swim fast--mine slammed the lid of the tank and killed himself.

Mine grew REALLY fast. I never measured him, but he had to be at least 10 inches. I got him at 4-5 inches from Jeff Rapps. He was smaller than other fish in the tank, couple months later he was too big to be in the tank with them and I had no place to move him.

I've had several Trimac's since that Lyonsi, and I'd say they are VERY similar--except Lyonsi grow faster. Similar aggression levels, close to same size, look similar except for color.

Get a bigger tank.

Also, if you want a breeding pair......get a bunch small and let them pair off. If Dan sends you a male and a female Lyonsi at 6-8 inches, good chance they'll never breed. If you get 6-8 Lyonsi of different gender, very good chance 2 will spawn. I have a male and female Trimac right now, and they won't spawn.

I respect your advice, youre probably one of most knowlagable in regards to cichlids. Most of the people said they were a slow glowers, bunch of the youtube videos i saw showed them fairly mellow. Im not sure what to think now. As far as the plants well see, most of them are ferns, though plants. As for the breeding the fish are only 5 inch, should be a good chance of pairing if not, of well. For the set up i will probably do what i had before kind of a island in middle even if they decide to spawn its going to be a one side of tank. What i heard is that the trimacs are psychos. Not sure what to think

For the record I was saying robertsoni were slow growers. I have no experience with Lyonsi so don't know much about their growth rate.
If lyonsi is as aggressive as ragin says, they may not be good for robertsoni. I wondering if a lyonsi pair would take over the tank.

Lyons is in the genus Amphilophus, so any info about the personality of most Amphilophines should be considered valid for them. Although I find the red devil more communal types pussycats compared to the loners like trimaculatus or lyonsi.
I find in most cases, the more colorful a new world cichlid is, the more aggressive it is.
Its kind of similar to poison dart frogs, or coral snakes, they advertise the fact that they shouldn't be messed with, or even come near.
