Making my 150g dream tank a reality

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks for the comments everyone! I really do appreciate it, even if I don't reply to each one. It's great to have encouragement while I'm putting this beast-tank together. Sometimes I'm a little overwhelmed because it's so much larger than any other tank I've had. I'll have to stand on a stepladder just to do water changes!

My family left today so I can get started on the next steps. Unfortunately the next week and half are really crazy at work, so I will have to go slower with the tank until that's all done.

Today I finally sat down and ordered the rest of the filter media for the Eheim. I stocked up on Ehfifix, Ehfimech, Pond Matrix, and polyfil. That's on top of the ~5 liters of media I already have to use. I think I'll be all set with the filter at this point.

I also discovered some great news. This past month, I've been doing an overhaul on my rented house, going through each room and donating a LOT to charity and selling the things I could. Among other things, I sold my kayak and bike and bought a cheap used canoe at a great deal on Craigslist. I also sold a few musical instruments and unused textbooks. Long story short, I am going to break even on this project! Can you believe it??? I think I'll enjoy it a lot more knowing I am not in the red at all. I'm super excited about that. :D

My midas is becoming a little bugger. He is so ready for the 150g!

I promise I'll post updates as soon as they happen. My next step is to cut the background and drill holes in it. Hopefully I can do that as early as Friday!

What size tank is the Midas in now? And what do you plan on doing with it once you move him?

You know what Natalie, I admire your enthusiasm with this tank. Seems to me that this site is so dedicated to having 10000 gallon tanks with 100000gph of filtration stocked 15ft fish; but you on the other hand, have set out a goal and achieved it and have a sense of satisfaction and happiness without going overboard. I love it. I hope this tank is all of what you wanted and more.

Thanks younglin. I can relate to her in a way. My realistic dream tank is the 180 I just set up. It took me a good 8-9 months of buying and fixing up and refinishing older tanks and selling them, but I got enough money together to get my 180.

I want a nice tall tank. 6 X 3 X 3 is perfect for me.

He's in a 40g breeder right now, and he's 5" TL. My current plan is to move my handicapped convict to that tank once it's open (he's in a 29g currently).

Thanks creepyoldguy! This is definitely a very satisfying journey for me because I'm building the exact setup I've always wanted. After being a fishkeeper for many years, I've never had so much fun with a tank before this one.
What do you have in your 180g? I'e seen pics of your Midas in your avatar-- he is a gorgeous brute. :)

I got a pic of my Midas today. He loves attacking the camera....

Nice looking little guy! I actually don't have my midas anymore. I had a black aro in my 180, but it jumped out while I was on vacation. I don't think it was getting enough food from the caretaker while I was gone. So to ease the pain, I bought a whole bunch of barbs from petsmart on black friday. I just have them in there until I decide what I want to get that will eat them all! Hahaha
