The difference between a dog and a snake is that a dog that attacks a child is a defective dog, whereas a snake that attacks a child is just being a snake.
it can be seen as that but the end result is the same , the discrimination on reptiles and other such pets is such bs . at least hold all animals to the same critic. also many dogs do bite and yet they had perfect homes . its a case by case issue. the problem with coming legislation is that it doesn't discriminate between harmless species and other .

The article is all the proof you need to tell her. I has happened ONCE with a boa. 13 times in 30 years for a python.
we should compare in the last 30 years vs dogs .

yeah a 9ft boa saw a full grown dude as prey. right!! this wasnt a 20 foot snake. And i severly doubt it got out and strangled the baby. more like dude was an idiot, let them in the same room unsecured and panicked and said it escaped
exactly , why should all reptile hobbyist suffer the consequences when its a few idiots not properly securing there animals?

Thanx guys, ive always used my common sense around snakes and read their body language to guage how they are feeling. I suppose its just a case of common sense and i would never handle my boa if she passes 8ft on my own.
Safety practice, never handle a snake bigger than 6-ft without a 2nd person around. The tail of a snake is like a human thumb. Grab it, and you can unwrap a snake that constricts you.

There's no difference! A dog that attacks a child is just being a dog, same like a snake that attacks a child is just being a snake.

^ exxxxaaactly!
animal = animal instinct.
its all the same no matter how domesticated, instinct is instinct at the end of the day.

It really makes little difference what the snakes motivation was, it killed him and maybe it would have choked on him but thats little consolation to the dead guy. Theyre reptiles whose survival instinct drives them to strangle mammals. If any snakekeepers dont have a serious lock between their kids and their pets theyre risking the same fate.

Not looking to pile on but you don't have a firm understanding of snake behavior.

Very true.

Well any animal has the potential to become nasty even domesticated breeds and species.

true , yet how many more times do we see in the news about dogs attacking kids and others?? why no legislation to ban or make it harder to own dogs?i agree that some snake owners are irresponsible and should take more care in securing there animals , but many more dog owners do as well yet they dont receive any hardship over it .

Um...Actually there is a lot of legislation out there restricting certain breeds of dogs. In some cases with this legislation therapy dogs with zero history of aggression have been put down because they are big muscley pits. This is a slippery slope which has caused much heart ache and has solved NO problems! Most times it's owners not properly taking care/handling their pets (dogs or reptiles). The people who do things the right way should not be punished for others deeds. More importantly if things are banned this leaves many innocent animals with out homes (look at all the dogs put down in Denver after their BSL passed). This is just not right and not a solution!

This is a horrible mentatality! People could be killed walking across the street, that doesn't mean we shouldn't walk across the street. If there is any solution to the problem of people owning animals that they are not properly prepared for it's education. People shouldn't own animals that they don't know how to care for or handle and if they rush out and do this anyway than you reap what you sow. I know death is a high penalty to pay for stupidity but it is what it is....You generally can't change the way animals act so if people continue to act irresponsibly when handling them then there will continue to be stories like this.
