Gun laws are extemely complex in the US especially because of varied the laws are from state to state, and the different requirements. I am not against guns, but it amazes me how many pro-gun folks are against gun registries, better control over gun shows, or setting up centralized databases that would allow for a more efficient manner for determining whether someone is suitable or not to purchase a gun.

I would hate to take away someone's hobby, or the passion that some folks have, but I cannot understand why some folks need access to some of the guns that are allowed. Below is clip that is hilarious but scary at the same time. Hopefully, at some point both sides can come together to do something different versus just blaming the other side and never making a change.

Terrifying and incredibly embarrassing. What a shame.

To be honest the right should only be gifted for those who are competent to handle firearms.

Here we have to pass a written test, background check, safe inspection, competency test alongside a few other tiddles to just be able to keep arms. And if I recall correctly it is only a shotgun, two rifles and up to two handguns. Something like that. More than that needs an advanced and difficult to obtain license.

The problem is for high calibre, fast firing weaponry in my eyes. Handguns are important for self-defence, and while concealable can't do the devestation that an assault weapon can bring. I think if people can't prove that they aren't a risk to society with a gun in hand then isn't it only logical to restrict their access? Why people are resisting this while lives are being lost is beyond me.

I haven’t read everyone’s posts prior but as a student I feel like this hit pretty close to home. It made me realize how much has changed over the time that my grandparents and even my parents were in school.

Society has changed from a place when violence was shunned to a place where violence is celebrated and rewarded with points in a video game. Those video games and the way they’re marketed aren’t marketed as anything other than fun and I believe there is a definite problem regarding how the games are influencing our youth. You walk down my dorm hall and just about every other room has the volume blasting from a first person shooter while the occupants are yelling like they’re actually risking their lives. The guns haven’t changed that much, it’s still the same thing just a different perspective.

I think we need to take a step back and reflect on what is truly happening in our Nation. We’ve got some enormous issues but other countries have their flaws. In the UK the rate of rape is twice as high as the US, drug offenses are 327 times that of the US, assault victim rate is two times that of the US, and total crime is 25 percent higher than the US, I could sell why America is better for days. But that’s not the point, what we all need to do is simply talk. I certainly don’t have an awnser to all of this, I have some ideas but I don’t think we’ll ever see any bi-partisan regulation done with the way things are headed.

Just my two cents

perhaps not allowing the general public access to assault rifles, when gun laws were created way back, guns were single shot rifles that took probably minutes to reload,
Hello; If you are referring to back when the constitution was made, keep this in mind. Those muzzle loading muskets were state of the art for the time. Are you trying to imply that if autoloading guns were available back then that the founders would not have had them?
but the AR class of weapons, extended clips, these are only used for destruction.
Hello; Your opinion perhaps but not correct.

Be careful with the term, assault rifle. This term is fabricated by the anti guns, and there's no specificity to what features on a rifle merits this term
Hello ; Yes to this.

A unmodified AR15 is no more dangerous than a semi auto hunting rifle.
Hello; Yes to this also. There are many semi-auto long guns around that use a self loading mechanism of some sort. The AR15 is simply the poster gun for anti gun activists.

US gun laws IMO are far too lenient
Hello; I do not believe this. Have you taken a concealed carry class or done any research on in laws? Not much, if anything, bad you can do with a gun that does not have some form of legal penality involved.

Once again, an AR15 is essentially cosmetic, it is no deadlier than any other hunting rifle, sold in its stock form.
Hello; This.

if that school has any kind of security in place but someone dropped the ball there.
Hello; I heard there may have been one school resource officer. Do not know if he/she was armed or if present at the time of the shooting.

Hello; As usual the shooter picked a soft target. Also to those complaining that the laws are not strong enough, the AG of Florida implied she will be going for the death penality. That seems plenty strong to me

I get the vans, cars and chlorine bleach can be uaed to kill BUT they arent intented to be used in such a way.
Hello; It is the person who gives intent to the way these things are used. Not of these items can make such a decision. ( Maybe later on with the self driving cars??)

To be honest the right should only be gifted for those who are competent to handle firearms.
Hello; The discussion between a "right" and a "privilege" has been had on one of the other shooting threads.
A drivers license is a privilege granted by the states and was not named in the constitution.
Rights are named in the constitution and all you have to do to have a right is be a citizen. Some rights have also been judged to attach to any person. You cannot attach stuff to the right to vote such as a poll tax or being a property owner.

Training of all would be a good idea but cannot be made a requirement to exercise a "right."

Great post. This is an issue that the right is losing they just dont know it yet. Im conservative but i cannot see eye to eye with them on this. Many of the conservatives i know are totally for restrictions, manditory training, and a database. To me thats a start.

"I don’t think we’ll ever see any bi-partisan regulation done with the way things are headed"

So sad but true and yet we'll fork over 30% or more of our earnings in taxes, pay taxes for everything under the sun we purchase (in most places), pay more taxes when we die and leave our family our estates but god forbid we have a converstation on gun regulation.

We've been talking about this allot between the family and i posed this question to a family member that was doing the whole constitutional right thing.....

This was the question :

I am from the future. I tell you that in 1 month an unknown person is going to legally purchase a fire arm and either modify it or purchase a ton of ammo and smaller arms, then walk into a crowded public place and kill 20 30 or 40 people. The kicker is that one of those people is one of your daughters (this person has two) BUT you have the chance to put laws in place that would stop this person from being able to obtain said weapon/s.

Can you believe this family member still would not restrict anything !!

Another hypocrite in my presence who was dead against regulations quickly changed his tune and said yes they would do what ever was need to protect their daughter. Smh basically its ok to do nothing as long as its someone elses child that dies.

It would appear to me that quite a few people dropped the ball in this tragedy...
This guy was disturbed and many people knew it yet did nothing.
Guy posted disturbing photos and content online and no one did anything.
Government creates "gun free zones",which make school kids fish in a barrel.
...and most egregious of all,the FBI WAS TIPPED OFF OF HIS THREATS QUITE A WHILE AGO AND THEY DID NOTHING ABOUT THEM!....perhaps they were too busy undermining the president.
But somehow,it's the gun's fault. It's amazing how some can come to such conclusions without even asking the "how, when, and where"questions.Just jump to the object that was used.

I think the calls for banning weapons are being blown out of proportion. Most common sense people understand the gun in and of itself isnt the problem.

In my state i need a licsense to fish amd crab but none for a fire arm.

Idk man

Same here in this state but those licences are to help conservation efforts, not public safety.

Wow.

Just thinkin outloud. Does the FBI have access to who owns a firearm i assime they did but read some conflicting info. From what i read its sounds like allot of effort has to go in to verify this and that its not in a centralized system. Maybe if they had access to quickly verify this it could have been avoided ? Dunno
