Midas aka Amphilophus citrinellus at Fish Story

It's not about the algae, it's about the critters that hide beyond the cracks & crevices of the rock formations found in the crater lakes. The search for those critters is what creates the hypertrophied lips, in certain African cichlids, and speculated the same for crater lake cichlids.

But no doubt that the increased aggression is about territorial disputes. I once watched a small tropheus fry defend a sponge filter. lol Anything that adds structure can be considered territory, for feeding, hiding, spawning, etc. With aggressive species, as unpleasant as it can be aesthetics wise, with large groups of fish a bare tank will help keep the community calm.

I'm running into that issue with the HRP fry...put in a couple of small boulders for the rainbows but the fry are fighting over them. Pretty funny seeing these tiny things go at it. They're even starting to fight over a section of the glass wall. ?

A strikingly beautiful 15" rescue male midas from Orlando (he claims RD but I see no difference whatsoever from our midas Atan). I named him Lando. Atan doesn't welcome Lando to say the least, so Lando lands (pun intended) in a friendlier 240 gal.
