You would be surprised where those cougars can be found. There were some recent sightings of cougars in far western Kentucky.

Cool cat. As soon as the snow lets up and I can get up there, I'll have to bring my camera with the extra lens, then we can get some good shots from a distance without having to get close. Would love to get a few shots of her.

If animal control wouldn't relocate it, it would be dead. I have 4 small children, and couldn't trust it on my land.

In CT thats the mentality amongst soccer moms with massive houses in rural areas.

Isn't this an accepted risk, being your choice to live there? Or do you move in and kill everything around so its nice and comfortable for you? The large amounts of snow surely could have caused this encounter, but perhaps overdevelopment and encroachment is making these occurrences more and more common in the big picture.

we had a cougar killed by a car here in KC a few years ago. I never found out if it was determined it was a domestic pet that got out or truly wild. Created quite a stir around since we have so many deer living in our suburan areas...

I understand your position unfortunatley wild animal encounters over a period of usualy result poorly.. If it was me I would have shot it, glass windows offer little protection when an animal wants in.......

This is absolutely an accepted risk. I don't have kids, or the situation would be entirely different. I live on a 200 acre ranch, the only thing that has been killed are some sweet Azz mule deer, and Elk for food. I'm really not in favor of even killing them, but they are much healthier than store bought meat, and they must be hunted to prevent starvation, a couple months ago, there were herds 20 thick in the yard and orchard, always in view. Now there's none. There's no food, this winter is really bad. The feline predators have enough quail to keep them alive, but probably hungry still.

Luckily I border a National Forest that connects to a National Park then clear into British Columbia, it's not overpopulated by humans at all. It's raw, wild and for the majority untamed land. I am a guest in their environment, I am against killing any animals really. If it were a bear, no way, he'd be a nice rug by now, they are way too unpredictable and dangerous.

I have studied feline behavior for years, and am writing a book, I just never expected to get so lucky to have them here to study. I don't walk outside in the dark without looking out the window for tracks, and I carry a shotgun or the .45 always this time of year. I hope to God I never have to use them.

I was looking with night vision goggles last night, but the snow falling really messes up my eyesight in them, so it wasn't very productive.

OK Jeff! can I use Betty Boop as bait for the dog theory??? JUST KIDDING!!
I think there's a good chance of getting Bobcat photos, if I get a fresh track in this new snow, I can usually get pretty hot on his trail, have to use the truck and spotlight, but I know his routes now! He walks right down the middle of the Canyon road snagging everyone's chickens.....it's pretty funny cause my neighbor thinks he's gonna eat her.....heh heh he's just a little dude....I really want to put the hide from the wall (I didn't kill it) on her fence but I think she wouldn't laugh!

I know where a coyote den is, the pups will be out soon, across the big field on the plateau-they play outside when mom hunts, really cute!

Man reading this thread just makes me jealous, i/we were a couple of weeks away from moving to the country and my wife found out she was pregnant with out 1st kid. That put the end to that move, and now i'm stuck in the city and she has no want to move now.

Where you live sounds awesome. I hope some day to have that sort of place for a home. There's not a lot of untamed land left out there.

Think Betty would herd all them into one spot for a family picture? lol...

I don't know why people want to live in rural areas to 'get away from the city' yet chase away everything that makes the country life interesting - the wildlife and scenery. If you are going to live in a place like that and blast anything that comes to your property, don't live there.

I've worked in the bush for the past 4 summers, and I carry a buck knife, bear spray, and basically a wooden shovel handle with a metal point.

The knife is for eating grapefruit and carving sticks when I'm sitting down, the bear spray is for show, and the wooden stick is for work. ;)

I would only carry a gun if I was in grizzly or cougar country... even then, if a cougar ambushes you a gun isn't going to help. Animals typically avoid conflict, unless they want to eat you, are curious, or defending their territory or young.

Just pay attention to your surroundings and respect the wildlife, because it is their home and be a nice guest.
