Monster grass carp spotted! What to use?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here is a carp story.
Here in DE we have A LOT of small ponds. My brother in law and I were bass fishing out of my 9' pond prowler. Just using rubber worms on a hook with no weight. I throw my worm into some lillie pads and worked it out. It gets to the edge and the line starts taking off. I wait till it gets tight and I set the hook. The fight is on and it starts pulling the boat around the pond. Now I do not have a big rod and heavy line so Im fighting this fish and its pulling us around the pond. I couldnt even tell what it was till I got it close to the boat which took about 10 min. It turned out to be a grass carp a little over 4' and had to weigh over 20lbs. Come to find out when I pulled the worm out of the lillies it landed on his nose and when I set the hook it buried really deep. What sucks is I didnt have a camera with me, so just a story. I now keep a disposable in my tacklebox and I now have a camera phone.

Guess I'll add to the recipe ideas. My boyscout buddy and I used to fish for carp in a local pond. Wouldn't bite worms, carp bait, anything. They would however go crazy for biscuit dough soaked in big red soda. Just mix it till it's tacky, add some bread so it sticks and toss it on a hook.

I agree, catch the fish in a legit way, you'll be proud and we'll be proud. Besides, you don't want to catch this fish and forever have to amend your story so people don't know you snagged it.

Also, I'm pretty sure you said that out of jest and frustration and probably didn't expect everyone to jump on you.

not got it yet im waiting

One of the most popular methods of fishing for carp in England is with surface baits. There are a few choices when it comes to bait, the big two are bread crust and dog biscuits (sort that float). These are fairly instant baits so I would suggest trying them first. There are many terminal rigs for surface work. As a rule of thumb the less you have on the line the batter off you are, but there are times when some weight is needed to help you get your bait to the fish Grass carp are often taken on surface baits, ducks can be a pain, same goes for turtles!

haha. Hope you finally catch that fish. However, please dont go Moby Dick/Captain Ahab on us. hahahaha

I hate this fish.
I've tried EVERYTHING!!!
I see it everytime I visit the pond he lives in. 5-6 feet at least.
Just sits there...taunting me...

Don't worry though, I'm not resorting to snagging.

Good on you! Maybe try a dawn or dusk session.
Or some pre-baiting to get him onto a certain food
Or spend some time watching him instdead of fishing to see where/when he feeds

Seriously you need to get this fish, the reaction of people who said there wasnt big fish and you haul one in is priceless.

Trust me i know. I was fishing alocal lake where the asian locals fish with multi hook rigs and big weights (illegal in bc i might add!!), all that effort for sunfish of 2". I come along with a small bobber light line and ONE hook and haul in carp up to 15-20lbs with nothing less than 3lbs. All 5m from the bank when they fish at the horizon.

Seriously their looks were priceless!!! Thought they looked as though they wanted to lynch me for showing them up
