I have only been allowed to have 10 gallons here at home. I'm 23 now and a year away from my own place, so I can't wait to have a number of tanks in my apartment. My mother is rather hostile towards my fish keeping habit and has a tendency to say things like "Not everyone's life revolves around fish!" when I do things as simple as water changes. I don't get what the big deal is. They bought my very first 10 gallon back when I was 9, but once I was 14 and working, I was paying for my own hobby. I guess it does take up some electric and water, but compared to my sisters 45 minute showers and hours spent drying her hair (not to mention designer clothes!) I am downright cheap!!
My girlfriend, fortunately, finds my habit adorable. I've tried pointing out to her that once it is OUR $50 being spent at the fish store, it won't be quite so adorable, but she just smiles and kisses me. I am hoping that once we live together I can set her up a decent sized tank. She likes those castles and treasure chests, which I fail to appreciate. But get this-- while I am quite appreciative of smaller tetras and barbs, my girl is totally into tank busters!!! It's insane! I sent her a link to a website and said "What fish on here do you like?" And she was picking out African Cichlids, Blood Parrots, Jack Dempseys and Jaguar Cichlids. I laughed and said a prayer of thanks to have met her.
Most of my friends never come over my house, so they never see my tanks. I am a HS teacher and have set up a variety of tanks at school, so everyone there knows me as "the fish person." So yeah, that's great. I get people who stop to admire the tanks, and others say "I don't know how you do it. It's too expensive/much work!" The students like the tanks though, and that is really all that matters, you know?
