monster tank owners worst nitemare!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
 So sorry for your loss!! I feel your pain. Went thru something similar (smaller scale) but was a bit more complicated cause my condo is on the 11th floor!! Water damage to my unit & 2 units below was a mess. Neighbors were not happy campers. Mine was 110g A/G, failed on the bottom (A/G cust. serv. sucks btw). Decided to go w/ Tenecor & so far so good. Good luck w/ the cleanup & insurance. "T"

Sorry for your loss, i have been fortunate that none of my tanks have ever done that.(knock on wood) I hope that it all comes out well in the end.

well its been a while, thought i'd update this thread..my house is back in order and tank replaced with hopefully a better, more reliable builder..the new tank was built by envision acrylics..james was good to work with and did a very nice job in the new tank..

i used the old cherry stand that was used before after replacing the plywood top and back and adding alittle reinforcing since it was wide open..

all flooring in my home was destroyed as well as all molding and some drywall damage..fortunately i'm proficient in these things and with my labor and the insurance claim i was able to rebuild my home with minimal cost to me..state farm was resonable to deal with..not perfect but reasonable anyway.as a side note, insurance carriers don't cover aquariums unless they are damaged from a fire or other claim..since the aquarium was the object to cause the damage, it wasn't covered but they did cover most everything else.some of you other monster tank owners may want to add your tanks to your policy as i was shocked at the cost of replacing that tank..acrylic has gotten extremely expensive so its something to keep in mind.

i'll attach a few pictures of the rebuilt room..thanks for the kind words of support, i hope my fellow fish keepers dont have this happen to them..

I have a tank from Precision Aquarium built by Woody and not Mike. I visited the location back when Mike had the store and bought a tank later whne Woody owned it.

Woody bought the name and facility from Mike and inherited nothing but crap. When I was their, he was repairing some of the tanks Mike had built although he still wasn't making any money yet. He was basically upside down on the business and trying to make right a couple of old customers.

Mike was building tanks that were too large for him to handle. He was leaving saw marks and such on the joint ends of acrylic because he lacked the machinery to cut really think acrylic, yet that didn't stop him from taking orders on monster tanks(600 gallons plus). As mentioned, he also shorted customers on the thickness of acrylic used.

I think that Woody is a stand up guy and would be interested to hear if any tanks built by him have failed. I would hate for Woody to take on all the bad press from the other owner, although that is what happens when you buy an established business.

i don't know about the too large for mike to handle, but from what i have been told since, mike used the wrong acrylic for the aquarium.2 diffrent builders told me the acrylic used (chemcast gp) is NOT recommended for aquariums as it doesn't allow the glue to to weld together well thus a poor seam.state farm did want to "pursue" woody but since i would not let them take the pieces of acrylic for "testing" they decided against it.

i hold no ill will towards woody.he did not build the tank and i'm sure he regrets the purchase..robkob another member of this forum had a tank that failing as well, he was lucky enough to get it out of service before it blew.

What did Woody say when he heard yours blew?? Or did he respond?

I wonder what Acrylic Woody uses? That gets me worried although I really think that Woody re-did how he built the tanks. He saw so many failed tanks come back that he was constructing them different from Mike a few months after he bought the business.

There was a long thread on Precision Aquarium a few years ago on "the other" board that you could probably find if you typed Precision in the search function. It had pictures including some that I took of the shop and some joints on tanks. I would re-post here but it was too long ago and I lost the pics on a bad hard drive.

Now that is my worst nightmare.

Great job rebuilding everything-it looks as good, if not better, than before.
