More still borns. What am I doing wrong?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
2 out of the 3 of my new born pups didnt eat for a month then My 2 pups started eating 2 days after i added those 5 micron sediment filters to my drip. Im just figuring it had a direct effect on my tds. All my rays are eating a ton now and all my tanks are insanely clear.

All my carbon filters are also 5 micron sediments.

Kind of irrelevant though, like I said all systems are fed by the same drip, so really don't think that's the issue.

I'll check numbers before and after filters tomorrow, but I thought last time I checked the filters didn't have much impact on tds/conductivity. Thought the only thing that really changed it was an RO membrane........

You ever see your rays breathing out of one speracle? My pups were breathing funny until i added the sediment filters. My filters are turning brown in a matter of days.

With the same water parameters in both systems, I'd look at the physical end of the systems themselves to determine what is different about them.
I had a situation with two similar set ups in different locations were giving me very opposite results. I literally took out a sheet of paper and wrote down EVERYTHING I could find different between them (even little stuff like location in relation to ambient lighting and amount of water flow in different areas of the tanks).

Db maybe your smaller tanks are filtering the smaller particles more/better? Making it easyier for pups to breath?

Look at TDS/conductivity numbers. The exact opposite is true.

Main differences are -

1) smaller systems don't get dripped as much (higher numbers reflect this).
2) flow rate through bio.
3) amount of food dumped in the tank

are there big potentially agressive fish along with the rays in the succesfull/indipendant tanks ?
could one of the large fish be very ocasionaly picking on the female when shes most vulnerable near the end of pregnancy causing her to terminate ?

if the water is the same in the big tank and the independant tanks then its either not the water or its something your not testing for.
can you send samples to a local aquarium and ask them to test the water for you maybe ?
is the female in the heavy stocked tank getting her fair share of food under all those big greedy fish especially near the end when its probably harder for her to eat large amounts in one go ?

sorry for your bad luck db. im sure we all wish we could give you a definite answer but hopefully the additional questions will help.

good luck db !

Thanks for your reply Yarg!

As soon as movement was confirmed in both females they were moved to a 180 gallon tank that they had all to themselves. NO fish whatsoever. This 180 is tied to the entire 750 gallon system via a 1K gph pump that feeds filtered water into this 180 from the return pump area in the final stage of the filter sump.

The smaller successful system has a single Dorado around 12-14".

I've had problems before with keeping pups on drips. Makes me think it's something to do with all the new water, BUT given the amount of water dripped vs system volume it doesn't really add up unless I'm dripping wayyyyy more then I think I am. Will check tonight when I run TDS #s, but pretty sure that's not the case.

Going to end up selling off half of the stock here IF I can't get to the bottom of this and I'll just start over again.

Just a stab in the dark but could it just be stress related to so much activity in the big tank? Maybe not even have anything to do with water chemistry or quality.

With your stellar bio setup wouldn't you be able to easily cut your drip by half with no negative consequences?
