My 210 FOWLR Turned Reef

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been having Apex problems today. I guess my Temp. probe is bad. The temp. was going haywire and kicking the chiller and heater on when they shouldn't be. Had to spend a long time talking to Neptunesystems, but I seem to have everything figured out, now I just have to wait for my temp. probe to come in.

I am making lists of stuff I got, here is an example of the scale of what I bought. No equipment on the list, just supplements, additives, and test kits. LOL Almost all of them are full, some new.

That's too bad about the Apex; at least it was just the probe, though.

Did you buy out a saltwater store or something because that's a ton of stuff! You'll definitely have a PM from me after the holidays for some of what you're selling; please let me know what equipment, if any, you'll have for sale as well.

Thats annoying... on the upside you noticed before it was to late. I hate that i don't have a tank right now... I have the opportunity to pick up a mated pair of golden dwarf morays for 300$ It is sooooo *&^&!@$ anoying... I've always wanted to attempt to breed these... but I would have no where to put them, and my larval rearing equiptment is all boxed in my parents basement 3hrs away... RAGE! lol

So I ordered 2 dosing pumps and 2 space saver thin 1.05 gallon jugs from BulkReefSupply over Black Friday. If you look at it in the vertical position there are the numbers 1-4 that run from the bottom to 2/3rds of the way up the jug. If you look at it laying horizontally there is one mark near the top that says 4 liters. I wasn't really paying attention when I got the jugs and I made 1 gallon of 2 part alk in the jug with enough water for it to almost be full. My thinking is that a 1.05 gallon jug almost full would be a gallon. Well then I poured a full gallon of calcium solution from their gallon jug(comes with 2 part starter kit) into the other 1.05 gallon jug. That didn't fill it up. So then I knew my Alk solution was not at the proper saturation and needed to know how much the jug actually held. So last week I emailed them about this issue and finally got a response. The response was you can read the jug either way and each number on the jug represents a liter.

So today I am ready to get my dosing pumps online and started looking at these jugs more. I poured out enough solution so that with the jug vertical the water was level with the number 4. Turn the jug sideways and it is no where near the 4 liter mark that way. I start to look at the vertical marks 1-4. 1 and 2 are about 3 inches apart, but 3 and 4 are closer to 2 inches even though those 2 numbers have water displaced by an indent in the middle of the jug.

So each one of the vertical numbers does not represent an even measurement like liters in my mind.

I call BRS. I ask them what unit the vertical markings are in and how much the jug actually holds. I get put on hold for multiple minutes and then am told that the jug holds 1.5 GALLONS!!! What?!? He also tells me the vertical markings are in quarts! What?!?

I tell them that the 4 liter mark horizontally is too close to the top to hold almost another half gallon. The horizontal markings can't be quarts, because when turned horizontally 4 quarts would be way closer to the 4 liter line. Plus the displace water and uneven markings going vertically.

He puts me on hold again to ask another person that may know. He then comes back and says they are sold to them as that and that is what they sell.

I say, "So you don't even know anything about the jugs you sell?" Answer,"Ummm, well that is what they ahhhh tell us." I say,"Really, I guess I am going to have to manually do it myself and figure it out so that I can make the solution I made the proper consistency for dosing.

Note to self, don't try to make the solution in these jugs, it will have to be transfer in after mixing in a different container.

Ridiculous IMO that they wouldn't even have any clue. They sell 1.5 gallon jugs as 1.05 gallon jugs/4 liter jugs. They don't even know the units on the jugs.

Looks like the jugs are just over 1 1/3 gallons after manually measuring and filling the jug up. Good job BRS!

Dosing pumps are now online wooohoooo!

Also going to be switching my lighting to reflectors from the fixture I have in the coming weeks. Already found a buyer for my lights so I will just have to switch them out and add to my canopy a bit.

Got my pH probe online finally. Just ordered solution so I can calibrate the ORP probe.

Got some batteries and am excited for tomorrow to see if the Calcium, Nitrate, and Salinity monitors and probes work. I sure hope so.

Well the Nitrate probe works. The calcium probes are not working however. Ugh. That would have been really sweet if they did, or at least one. I have to wait on the salinity, need a solution that I ordered.

This is why I don't like probes... they can fail... but when they work its a wonderful thing haha.

Ya. I don't like them either really, but they are pretty awesome when they work.

Now my pH probe that I calibrated yesterday is freaking out! Probe Problems.

I use probes all the time in my chem labs, but those are different, a) they cost WAY more, and b) they arent expected to run 24/7.
