the vines might look more natural.
did you consider cutting out the box and just doin a tube to make more space?

This is looking good nice idea. not sure how you would go about getting the cork to stay down but if your soaking it wouldn't you have to dry it before attempting to silicone to it?
shaving to pieces thinner would be i good idea looks good but also seams to take up alot of space.
moss to fill in the cracks i think would look great not sure on your stock but java moss or something real i always like more

I did consider cutting the overflow box.and basically making my own but when i realized it is attached to the bottom AND the top I started thinking it may serve as some structural strength for the tank as well so I decided not to cut it. I know it can't serve as a major structure but if it has any strength to it I would rather leave it

Oh yeah this is just a rough mock up, no silicone or anything keeping the pieces where they are. I definitely plan on thinning the pieces out, they are taking up too much.precious real estate for my fish and that just can't happen. I am kind of going back and forth between a real moss type plant or just a vine attached to the bark. I always like natural more, but I don't want it to grow all over the tree just enough to accent the wood and cover some key imperfections so still undecided which route I will go there but thank you for your feedback!

Good call, I bet it was structural. Better safe than sorry.
I think your on to something, it looks great! This is a great way to hide an overflow.

Thanks! Coming from you that means a lot, as you put it the Michael Jordan of fish keeping called you a good fishkeeper! Love the filtration on your 450!

i guess thats true about the structural part :( bummer
but lets see how thin you can get them suckers!
