My 9 yr old son's tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well ... as Fat Homer had previously suggested, I played the "Mini Takahashi Amano's" helper so to speak ... not sure how to attach Java moss to sticks (I tried using plant anchors) so if I did something wrong there, on my sons behalf, please correct me.
Plus I followed Petspoilers advice, get the kid what he wants (No CO2 yet ... he's nervous still), so he picked a bunch of plants himself, I paid this one. Then proceeded to disregard any of the parameters I had given him. Namely no plants in the substrate .... but I bit my lip and did as I was told (yes I vented later when the tank was done and I had already said to him good job). But its not fair. :(
There was only the one Anubias at the store we were at, it turns out, but he picked up 3 vals, a wysteria, 2 swords type (1 went into his 29G), 2 water onions (said I could have 1 for my 29G .... ahhhh nice kid .... my money), and a plant I've no clue about/had no label, then gave me the damaged Anubias from his 29G for my 29G to replace the watersprite he wanted for the 30G.

(He had paid for half the light from money he'd earned on Grandma/Grandpa's farm this summer ... a Fluval LED 36"-46" 5500K 35W light ... not cheap ... but this way his little brother gets a night light in there bedroom that they share)

I'm curious to see how the java moss will grow out ... and hoping I didn't screw up attaching it.

I had waited until dark to take these pics so I could show the kids new night light. His brother 4yrs. loves the new blue light and the banjo's don't seem to mind either. Its helped make so many things easier in that regard.

And this is the pic I took soon after he was done ordering me around ... that's when I regained control .. put him on clean-up and gazed at what he'd accomplished. The unknown plant (haven't tried figuring it out yet) is the one on the far left of the tank.

Well ... need to have a talk with my wife. You see this thread is changing, it's no longer "My 9 yr old son's tank" ... it's now become "My 9 yr old son's tanks" (pluralized) as the 30G is becoming his tank and I'm losing tanks here ... nothings replacing them for me.

I've a feeling this could be the determining factor of CO2 or not for him. All plants have root tabs. So we'll give this one some time to grow and see what develops. Now we need to repair his 29G from when I put those macrobrachium sp. in it. One of his hornwort and water onion were detached from their roots (starting to grow back on the water onion) and an anubias was damaged a bit (he's now given it to me).

Hope you enjoy ... feedbacks always appreciated by him (and me) and thanks in advance

The tank doesnt look too bad, but i would maybe add some rocks or something to break-up the scape a little since from my POV, it seems to organized by sections of left, middle and right side of the tank if you get what i mean?

LOL ... I'm beginning to think my son and you are sending messages to each other. He actually had some rocks/stones out to add to the tank. I think it may have been a look that crossed my face ... because when I questioned him about them at the end, he'd said "Its okay Dad that's fine as it is". So I'll have to pass this tidbit on to him and see if he wants to reconsider. The tank itself is in the corner so its only visible from the front and left side of the tank ... Guess I'm not always the best helper.
But in your opinion did I do right in how I attached the Java Moss with plant anchors .. or is there a better way?
As well ... my biggest concern was leaving the substrate as bare as possible for the Banjo's to bury themselves .... but that may be a concern that was unwarrented.

Rub it in, Rub it in .... Granny. You're beginning to sound like my Mom (... LOL ...). As for good job Assistant ... the jury is still out on that one. I may be influencing some of his decisions without even realizing it. Need to work on that one a little bit more.

u cant let him take control, u need to tell him he has to work hard for the tanks.if he believes he can have any tank he wants, soon ull have no tanks left for urself. plus hes nine, so for now just keep it at 2-3 tanks, and let him rescape them.

He's done it again never a doubt, looking good love how the wood pieces go from large to small gona look stunning when everthing grows , fluval led aswell lucky lucky boy (nice one dad ;) )

Nice ruining the mood, pole. Jk

Thanks redwolfish ...

Actually Pole ... I've got to disagree with you here. Even if I've lost 2 of my tanks. My son does good in a lot of different things and is very helpful. He doesn't get an allowance per say .... but earns money for certain tasks, being able to help out on my parents farm earns him even more. I do want to reward my children for things once in a while, some parents buy the kids game systems. My 9yr old son wanted the new WiiU ... so he had to buy that himself. (Which he did ... I ended up buying him a game for it). We knew we needed a new light for the 30G if we wanted to try some plants, but then we also had the issue of my Banjo's needed dark and his brother needing a night light. I showed him our choices and what each light was capable of. He really wanted the LED. So I offered to pay for half the light ... now he had plans for his money, but decided to post pone those plans and pitch in on the light. Now one day he'll be doing most of my tank maintenance ... I've got 2 rods 5 pins holding my Lumbars together in my back ... I'm in my mid 30's and my body is already wearing out due to arthritis, so in a way his taking over my tanks is a blessing in disguise. Plus we get to learn things together and have something that'll probably bond us closer for years to come.

Actually the light was more him than me .... but I'll take the compliment :)

Anyhow just finished reading him the latest posts from the past couple days ... Asked him if he had anything he wanted to say ... His reply "I'm a little speechless right now". Although he's back to looking at the rocks we've got ... I've a feeling the tank's gonna get some tweeking done to it. Thanks again Fat Homer. Your reply was the reassurance he needed I think. I've never had Java Moss in any of my tanks yet ... so I'm looking forward to seeing this tank in a couple of months from now.

On my own behalf, it's humbling to see so many compliments directed at me for aiding his passion for fishkeeping and aquascaping. But I've got to be honest ... just by making this thread .... it's all of you as well as myself who's aiding my son. He truly enjoys hearing the feedback from other fishkeepers, and craves the guidance some of you have given. So in a way I'm thanking all of you's who contribute to this thread ... as I couldn't be half the help I've been to him without you all.

So once again thanks ...

We cant take too much credit here, since if you werent willing to let him work on the what was originally your tanks or help him out a little bit financially he may not have kept the interest up...

So i would say props to you and your son for having a healthy hobby you can share together...

Now as for tying down plants to objects, other than the method you already used, some keepers will get brown cotton thread, or fishing wire then firmly, (but lose enough not to chock the roots) tie the plant to the wood
