My 9 yr old son's tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ha I like hearing your feedback and his reactions almost as much as the pics of the tanks he does! And him entering that ADA contest in the future is not a bad idea... Like I said, he's got some serious potential!

if u gonna go monster, try a planted or a paulodorium. its a mix of land and water, and will be a stimulating challenge and get his creativity going.upgrade slowly, so he comfortably finds his way and will be much more ready for paludoriums or monster planteds. wish him luck

Its really great to hear that hes taken such a keen interest in the hobby, and its especially great to see you helping him out and nurturing his passion for this kind of thing...

All i can say is keep up the good work on both your parts and we should be seeing more great things from you your son :)

Way better than my tank when I was nine, had a Serpae Tetra that nipped the tails of any other fish in the tank until their tail was gone.

Thanks ... I try not to post on this thread unless there's something to say about him ... kinda keep it his for when he's older and has his own account here. And I agree with what you say about potential and ADA contest .. hence proud but frustrated Dad ... as well every screw up I do I share with him (as he's usually watching me the whole time).

That's something I've been mulling over in my mind the mix of land and water. Something that him and I could possibly do together down the road ... thanks for the idea.
As for the real planted aquarium ... trying to convince my wife into allowing us another 29G at least .... although I might sneak in a 20 or 25G should she keep refusing ... they're easier to hide so to speak :)

Thanks Fat Homer .... he enjoys your responses ... as he's seen the help you've given me a few times. Plus my becoming his helper was bonus in your corner. :)
By the way you know anything about Chameleon Shrimp (Machobrachium Sp.) ... I have a different thread running on it.

Way better than my tank when I was nine, had a Serpae Tetra that nipped the tails of any other fish in the tank until their tail was gone.

LOL .... thanks .... don't feel bad HZO .... my first tank had 3 goldfish. The one killed the 2 and then committed suicide by jumping out of the tank.

Anyhow .... the reason I'm responding at the moment is my son is currently helping me redo my 30G Banjo Catfish tank. I got the base of his tank for my shrimp ... so fair is fair. I'm allowing him the top of this tank for the swords he'd originally gotten with his guppies off of craigslist. At the moment we're debating on plants or no plants .... He's got sand and three pieces of driftwood I've selected for this tank. Plenty of spots to attach anubias type plants on the driftwood (its more roots than wood) Otherwise I don't want much in the sand as the banjo's like to bury themselves. Open to suggestions and yes there will be photos of what he accomplishes.

Well my son was pretty much doing cartwheels on Friday. We came home to find baby guppies ... he was running around calling himself a true fishkeeper. LOL. Anyhow all we needed all this time was females.
We got my 30G banjo tank up and running again this past week. I let him scape it but he didn't have complete cart-blanche this time.

We're gonna get plants now (in time), need to get a different light first though.

He's slowly starting to take over my tanks it seems, he keeps trying to refer to MY 30G as his 30G .... GRRRRRR .... He's maintain his 29G quite well, and keeps asking to take over the 30G also.

More and more, we're both thinking about that Paludium style tank. But that's still a project for a later date.

Get a 300 like I did and have it tower over him ;)

Oh he'd like that ecoli73 ... but the first 300 that comes into this house is MINE ....

Anyhow another quick update ... guess I chose wisely when I put my shrimp in his Guppy tank. He came into my room this morning to let me know we've now got baby cherry shrimp. He's kinda taking create for it, afterall I only do the water changes on that tank. So I guess I admit ... to date so far ... he's the better fish keeper between us. I've never had babies ... he's now had his Swords breed, his Guppies and now my Cherry Shrimp .... to date I've had nothing. Then again I haven't really tried ... maybe he'll teach me his secrets. But all in all, he's a very happy boy at the moment.

dude, if u cant get guppies or swordtails or ANY livebearers to breed ur the best fishkeeper ever.
