the big one pictured above is M Dayi. imo they are very similar to armatus. i wouldn't be surprized if they are a color varient ect or subspecies. not sure if the classification is made purly on collection/distribution or gentically with these guys.

I sold my big armatus awhile ago.. and the tiny one i got ended up jumping out( the same day another fish from the tank above did as well, was very odd.). I have not seen much differences besides coloration. the growth rate has been pretty close, as well as temperment, feeding preferences ect.

And i did end up moveing the fire into his own tank for the time being, my other m dayi despite haveing plenty of room harassed and chased the lil guy relentlessly. Ive found after an initial hour or so if the aggression continues it will escelate to death either from stress, or jumping. hes doing fine now, 20 gallons to himself and all the live blackworms he could want.

MonsterMinis I believe we have the same taste in fish! I just picked up a 6" fire eel two days ago! He ate from my hand 3 hours after being in the tank. I plan to house him with my gar eventually also unless you advise against it.

Mine did fine with my florida gar, and would make good tankmates. I would wait until the eel is as long as the gar or larger before adding. gamr have been known to eat smaller eels though i have personally had no issue now keeping any of the larger species with gar at any size. I would suggest keeping the fire in the tank first then adding a gar not vise versa... ie letting the fire eel settle into a 75 or larger for a few weeks, eating ect well and happy. then adding a 12" florida. i would not keep an alligator gar with eels, and my cuban has gotten into scuffles with my large leopard eel a few times. fires being more docile in general might not be good for the more aggressive gars ( ie gators, cubans, or tropicals). but floridas are likely going to be fine.

I would also never put pvc in a gar tank... i almost lost a gar to getting stuck in a tube, use driftwood for the eel to hide. the only exception would be if you used 90s and where confident the gar could not manuver the angle.. imo not worth the risk.
