my CA cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
One more fish to show, but I'll create him his own thread in another forum. I think this guy probably got ahold of some swordtails too.

I know some people won't like him, but I think he's a pretty fish. I think it just looks like a really colorful CA cichlid. It has a normal kok, and I don't think it's going to grow a huge one. What can I say, I like small koks.

He's actually not been very aggressive. He's obviously the boss of the tank, but he doesn't chase. The other fish just kind of move out of his way.

Obviously this is a potentially volatile mix of fish. I don't want any fish getting beat up, so I'm monitoring the situation closely.

Believe it or not, the most aggression I've seen is between the two snooks. They've done some lip locking and pushing each other around a bit, but they spend most of their time shoaling peacefully together. My guess is they just need to establish who is the dominant one every once in a while.

Nice. What else are you putting in there? The orange form of Melanarus from Belize would look great with the snooks. I agree with others, I like the “regular” pattern over the pink.

I was going to add a synspila, but I ended up doing the FH instead. With the red head and normal sized nuchal hump, it kind of looks like a nice vieja. If the FH doesn't work out long term, I'll go ahead and add something like a syn or melanurus. Same for the carpintis.

One more thing I wanted to show. The FH dug a pit at one end of the tank. Is this a breeding pit or something else? He picked up the gravel in his mouth and spit it out into a pile next to the pit.

I'm not seeing any pairing activity, and I'm not even sure there is a female fish in the tank...

What do you make of this?

Also, sorry for the large pics, which show as attachments. The only one that embedded was one I cropped. I'd prefer them all to be embedded. The browser can easily scale images, so it must be something in the forum software. I'll look into making the pictures smaller in the future.

I was also thinking about adding a Nicaraguan cichlid - Hypsophrys nicaraguensis. But it would have to be a male growout. Let me know if anyone has any ideas as to how I could get one.

If you value the carpintis, I would remove the FH.

To your flower horn a female could swim by any time. The pits are normally part of spawning behavior. He's going through the motions, ready for a passing female to be impressed by his pit.

I've also known cichlids dig small pits like that to sleep in. Most of the time it's connected to spawning and setting up camp.

Or a male, to look at it or him the wrong way.
