My DID-IT-MYSELF Stand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 180 sitting on way less then that for the past 4 years and the stand never ever made a sound so far not even during large water changes when 80% of the weight comes off and goes back on. You'll be just fine.

I bought a used 180 that came with a stand. It is only made of four 2x4s at the corners. I've had it for a year with no issues, so I'm not sure why they are so worked up.

I've decided to add more cross supports, also I'm going to put 1" plywood covering over all six sides. (I might not put it on the bottom)

New supports in blue.

I live in Cali; and I put 1 x 4 's around the outside of the stand sticking up about an inch. It might keep the tank from sliding off in a quake. it doesn't block the view into the tank, it just covers the bottom frame of the tank. I also bolted the stand to the wall studs. Nothing's going to save a tank in a big quake, but I think mine will do better than it would in a quake without these precautions.

btw I like to overbuild stands, too

I havnt realy thot about quakes. I live on the riverside county/orange county border and the minor quakes we've had recently have not bothered my weak 2x4 180 stand.

I know right? Overbuilding is the greatest! I got like 50 metal braces on it, construction glue, 3.5 inch screws, im gonna put like 4 more 4x4s on it, I love it!

i will do sumthing like you did to raise the edges and get the tank in like a boxed up position, i havnt decided how to proceed with that

If your tank has the black plastic trim, then the corner supports are all you really HAVE to have.

You know how many 210 stands I could have built out of all that lumber? A lot. LOL

The raised edges are to keep the tank from sliding off in an earthquake...something you need to think about in CA.
