My DID-IT-MYSELF Stand

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That stand is WAY overbuilt. I frame new homes (mcmansions) for over 10 years. A corner post on a building consist of (3) 2x4's and that holds up a section of a 2nd floor and a roof line! The downward pressure it would take to snap a stud on edge is immense! On a house you also have the sheathing (plywood) that helps tie things together and prevents bowing or buckling. Your uprights are so short that it isn't a concern.

Even though that tank aint goin anywhere the only flaw I see is that perimeter band on top. If the tank relies on its perimeter and rests on that band, you are more or less relying on the shear strength of the fastener. (Drywall screws have a sh|t shear strength value) Through bolting those 4x's to that band with carriage bolts would be better.

If there were a stud directly UNDER that band it would be a better design.

the tank sits only in the 4x4s, it does not touch the 2x4s at the top

The raised edges are to keep the tank from sliding off in an earthquake...something you need to think about in CA.

:)

That's cool. I was just referring to anyone saying that it wouldn't be supported. It will be fine and the outside box will just keep it where it's at.

If the tank base frame sits on the 2x4's then how are the 2x4's attached to the 4x4's? The screws or bolts that join the 2x4's and 4x4's will carry all the weight. You need bracing between the top and bottom 2x4 frames.

You can see how I remedied the same problem on my 1st stand. Kinda overkill but it holds well.
