My first big amazon catfish: leiarius Marmoratus

Has anyone had a problem with young achara's being very shy? So far in the 5 days I've had him he has not come out of hiding. He ate two night crawlers that made their way into the achara's hiding spot but other than that he has not eaten either. He is a very demure fish so far. Will he start coming out more when he gets larger or maybe this is an issue because he is stressed from shipping?

Loved the vid and the thorough, sensible presentation.

When they are small they hide a lot, so if you wanna see him often, you'd have to change something. Even my 1'-2'-ers were hiding most of the day time in a 4000 gal. 2' Leiarius pictus was not hiding but the 7 marmoratus were, some more some less but they were mostly nocturnal. They all did come out to dinner though.

Mine never hid, but then again there wasn't a hiding spot lol. He would come to the surface when it was feeding time. Same with my MRTC hybrid.

Thanks guys! He has still not come out but he has been eating. I just have to put the food near his hiding spot.

He will adjust.... once settled in he will come out in the day and feed. Mine would feed with lights on and steal all the food before my rays could eat so I sold him. Was 12-13 inches when sold.

How long did it take for him to get that big? And from what size?

So typical of that fish :)

Mine went from 3" to 6" in 1 month and to 1' in 6 months.

Mine grew to from 2-3" to 12+ inches in appx 9-10 months. I never did measure but I tend to under estimate sizes so he probably was larger when sold. And wasn't picky about anything it ate. Now that my rays are larger I wish I had him back. My Jurense feeds during the day now that he is a 12"+ also. I believe most predatory cats will learn to eat when they understand that feeding occurs during lighted hours. Now my 9" Tig became food for the rays:( a few months back.
Actually considering getting another L. Marmoratus.
