My first Piranha

I don't think it's a case of "calming down the mob", you posted a thread on a very controversial subject that has been debated on many forums. People have posted their opinions, maybe on what they have heard, or maybe from first hand experience, but after all, they are entitled to those opinions. It seems to me that you are looking for a reaction from forum members on what you are doing, and you have got those reactions.

The juvenile nattereri is going to grow and it will most probably get picked on by some of the other fish. The clarias will, I know because I have seen it happen. When 2 cichlids fight over territories its just a case of, a bit of jaw locking and fin slapping. This does not work with something that has razor sharp teeth, and once a fish has no jaws its as good as dead. I would dearly love your experiment to work, but after keeping and breeding nattereri over the last 40 years, and trying to raise other fish with them in large aquariums, it hasn't worked, not long term any way.

I will be interested in how it works out, and I hope you will be honest, and post the results.

Not to be a douche or start a fight, but a couple of people have stated in this thread, that Piranhas CAN NOT cohab with other fish.

So i'm sorry alyssa. Your video is deemed fake, along with all the other setups i've seen over the last couple years. PHOTOSHOP MUCH?!

WHO are you?
This is not a fake video!
I will make video after video of my tank and it will not be different.
Most people who have commented on this thread can vouch for me.

Oh he was just being sarcastic and poking fun at everyone that has said no way it can be done.

Hey Hr, my pacus have grown fast too! I just measured them yesterday. I bought them 2 weeks ago at 6.5cm and 6cm. Now they are 9cm and 8.5cm respectively. These are awesome fish! I love to see them eat. They munched on my finger before and their teeth are rough!

My biggest fear here is for your cichlids. Since the piranha has no shoal he might become more aggressive and insecure thus he might cause some major damage to the tank-mates with his teeth. But who knows if he grows up with them they might create an oddball shoal.

I am not trying to be a douche either, just wait and you'll see..... at the end those are your fish.

Anyway you guys keep us posted about how long can your "piranha community" tanks last......:grinno:

the fin nipping by the piranha will get worse soon.
then chunks of flesh will start to go missing and then fish go missing ....! all the best mate/

I'd concur. They're cute when they're little, but they're not little for long.

Back in college, I did a similar cichlid/pirahna mix in a 40 when they were all little. This quickly became a matter of two 40s, then a 55 and two 40's, all in a dorm room!

Lloyd The Pirahna stayed with me throughout school and for several years afterward. Originally he had a tankmate named Mongo, but Lloyd ate Mongo when they were about 'teenagers'.

Fun fish...just not real good at sharing a tank as they mature.

Damn, I spelled Piranha wrong. Some things never change. :D

They're rather misunderstood fish...no where near as fierce as legend would have them. Still, I always had one eye on Lloyd when I adjusted stuff in the tank. He would let me pet him, though, and appreciated treats of raw hamburger and hot dogs and fish flesh from the lake we lived on.

My advice is keep an eye on the Piranha and when the fin nipping starts to get a little too pronounced, give him a few piranha tank mates and his own tank...a biiiig one.

Hotdogs - Hamburgers - Fresh fish from a lake - This is the MOST deadliest diet a Piranha could ever have. If you get more fish - any fish - please don't feed them this poisonous diet.
