I have already tried that,if you read one of the above posts i have put down what i have tried, which is alot!so how do i get him to recognise it as food.ive tried waving it near his mouth but he just swims off ive tried soaking everything in blood worm but he just dont go for it and ive been trying this day in day out since i got him,its not just a recent thing,im going to get some of that garlic stuff that you soak the food in and try that.

Steve

i have no idea why he would try garlic scented food if he didn't originally eat garlic-infused food.

have you tried using small dead fish at all? try pieces (cut to sizes he can eat) of raw frozen (but thawed) fish you can get from the supermarket. smelt often works.

have you separated the fish from all tankmates yet? often times this will help a finicky fish feed better...if you haven't done this already (which has been suggested for a while now) then you may as well not bother getting him to eat. in order for some of these suggested tactics to work you'll have to isolate the fish. good luck--

And might I add to this to separate the fish in a smaller tank 2x2 tank is too big IMHO for the fish at this time and in it's condition..

Below is a pic of a tank I usually use for small finicky gars to get them to feed.. You will get the idea.

Hi richard what are the dimensions of that tank?
He was isolated other than the guppys for the last 5 months then i put the bristle nose in there but took him out when you said thats a bad idea,so the bn was only in there two weeks, now hes in the discus tank and the gar was on his own other than the guppys which he was eating at a rate of about 1 every 3 to 4 days, and im yet again repeating myself when i say>the only reason i gave him feeders was to try and get him off the bloodworm and try and put some growth on him,but it didnt work as he wasnt eating the guppys quick enough to put on any weight was he,but he will still eat the blood worm but still nothing else.So i saw that seachem garlic entice stuff which is supposed to get finicky eaters to try something else, this has been something people on here have told me to try so i thought i would,if you know its not going to work, tell me and i will save my money.
I havent tried fresh fish yet but i will can it be any fish or should i be careful what i try,and i cant find any shrimp yet, none of the supermarkets have them, but il keep looking

Cheers steve

the guppies won't cause any serious problems so leave them in there in case he decides to snack on them

as for the garlic stuff...that's for many other fishes but i've never seen nor heard of it working with gars. save your money and skip it. if your gar is that much of a finicky eater that garlic stuff won't help.

pretty much any fresh fish will work...i would skip trout/salmon as it's really fatty and you'll end up polluting a small tank quickly. so he's all by himself aside from the guppies correct? i only ask because it's somewhat confusing when you say he's 'in the discus tank'...if there are no discus in there it probably shouldn't be called a discus tank (at least in this thread) so as not to confuse other readers.

can you post any pics of this fish? at least in its current state? this will help to judge its health--

Ha no hes not in the discus tank the bristlenose is!
Il try and get some fresh fish tomorrow,if i can,and i wont bother with the garlic entice stuff thats made by seachem, they do two sorts, and il try and put some pics up tomorrow for ya.

Would a tank 19 inch wide by 17 inch tall by 14 inch back to front(deep) be ok for him planted up?

Cheers steve

Yes, go with the 19 inch tank and fill it only part way. the extra depth is un-needed. Smaller space and shallow water will make finding food for the fish much easier. As Sol stated if you can get a new pic just to get an idea of the fishes current condition it would help.
