That's a really good sign. He recognizes it as a potential food item, and the movement nearly triggered a feeding response. I'd skip a day and offer food, skip an day and offer food and so on until he feeds. He'll have to be hungry before he takes something out of what is ordinary to him.
My only experience is with gar, but I would always take a very small sized fishing hook and cut the "hook" away so you are left with small straight piece of wire with the eye at one end. Put this in the fish fillet on the end so you can ultimately fish for the gatf. When he strikes its really easy to give a nice but gentle jerk and the wire pops right out. Did this for a couple of gar in my day.
Hikari's Jumbo Carnisticks are a godsend for ATF. Their spongey consistence makes them amazing for conditioning stubborn feeders onto pellets.
Okay thanks everyone for suggestions. Hoping it's not a fluke but I cut smelt in half before doing a water change and decided to just throw it in and see what happens and at ate 2 smelt. Thanks for everyone's suggestions hope it continues to eat and wasn't just a fluke.
It hasn't ate again yet but that's okay I'm not too worried since the date the first cut smelt. Today I installed the fx6 to the tank and man the Goliath loves the extra current that added normally it was staying kind of in one spot now it's writing the current back and forth looks very happy compared to how it was. I also painted the back of the tank black which I don't know if that helps it feel more comfortable but it seems to be enjoying the new filtration and darkness on the backside of the tank. All update when I eat again.
