My main tank setup

This enli was probably the nastiest poly ive ever kept but didnt eat the little sen. Who knows maybe doen the road it would have....no guarantees in this hobby.
Have you had any experiences with lower jaws eating upper jaws? for now the Sens have the size to be ok. Its the Ornate's who are growing quickly but currently a decent amount smaller than the sens I am more concerned about when I add him.

Yes I had one years ago didn't really know anything about them, guy at lfs said they didn't get that big and would work fine with all my other fish....he was wrong on all accounts. This was before internet....What there was a before internet!!? BI. We cave people were dumb but NOW we know it all........
Anyway he ate everything in the tank what he didn't eat he killed. It was a 90g could have had a lot to do with it. I had a sen, a ropefish, and about 15 African cichlids mixed, biggest one was about 5". Got him at about 6" and was told he may get about another 2" max in the next couple years ,he was 12" in 6 months and was the only fish left in the tank.
Look through the forums you will see most people don't mix them unless your talking the big three of upper jaws weeksi, teug, ornate, still gotta give your ujs time to out grow the endli. A few people have commented on their lj eating uj when mixed. As with any large predator if it fits in the mouth it could become a snack. I have a pretty good size Ctenopoma and I am hesitant to put him in the 180 because I worry that he may eat the Ropes. Hes a large predator and it wouldn't be his fault it'd be mine. Hes the only fish left in the 75 as of now and that needs to come down, Im probably going to do it but.......

Interesting. When you show me pictures like that I think maybe it would be ok. But then I look at the size differences and I get quite concerned. On the plus size the ornates are growing quickly.

I think the tank size might have had alot to do with it in your situation but I have decided to keep the endli in the QT tank for at least a few weeks until I am sure hes healthy and figure out if he could work in any of my other setups temporarily or if it makes more sense to remove the smallest ornate until it has grown out alot more and just add the endli to my main setup and monitor it. I am guessing you don't really like endli's after that situation twentyleagues? Would you guys say that endli grow faster than ornates? From what I read about them the endli they should end up bigger than the ornates in an aquarium?

Im not saying it would have worked long term either. Other members like Hao Hao and Dr.B Dr.B have kept both uj and lj and may be able tp shed some insight.

The size difference is a deterrent for me as well.

Were there any visible wounds on the oscar ?

If put ornate and endli pretty close in terms of growth out of the ones i've kept

As for lower jaw eating upper jaw. You would probably have to have a starving lower jaw bichirs that's greatly larger than the upper jaw. You should be fine as long as you keep everyone well fed. I've seen someone who had 24"+ lower jaw bichirs with a few 10"-12" upper jaw. Size difference was insane but it worked for them.

I didn't really check the wounds on the oscar looked like it had been dead awhile. Missing eyes etc. I can garantee it wasn't killed by polys. Would have been my bastard red terror or green texas. The polys may have just eaten it a bit after. I just decided to try the ornament free tank for a few days to see if it helps with any agression from these two fish. Really want to keep my red terror if possible.

My bichirs are always well fed usually twice a day so that wouldn't be an issue. The most significant size difference is between the endli and one tiny ornate. He is only like 3-4 inches. So far he has lived in peace with ornates and senegals more than double his size though. I will add the endli to the tank soon but I will remove the small ornate to growout a bit seperately as ornates go for $600 dollars here so not really worth the risk.....

Yup thats what i was getting at. Eat a cichlid maybe but polys really dont have the hardware to win a fight vs a cichlid lol
