If your not comfortable grabbing him by hand... take a pillow case and put it in the tank on the bottom... lower the water lever till you feel comefortable to guide the fish over the pillowcase and pull it up over both sides, then pull him out... if you can guide it INTO the pillow case that will work as well

If only i have thought of the pillow case trick when i was moving my two paimas. ...<sigh> ... tried the fishing net on one - lots of lost scales (heartbreaking sight that was ...it got its head stuck in the net - i thought my paima were bigger). The second one was done with a pillow case, not so much damage ^^ Though i did not get him INTO the pillow case, just over it. Next time need to make a strecher out of a soft fabric for moving big stuff around.

Plastic (unless really heavy duty) does not work well. When i was moving two alligator gars, one managed to punch through the bag ... Obviously, all are Ok, but it was quite a tense moment

PS: Will be posting the pix of (hopefully) fully recovered two paimas next week.

Oh god - I'm scared now! I'll try and borrow a video camera from somebody! I think I'm gonna try and get my husband to do the actualy moving of the fish hehe. How much do you think a 30" catfish weighs? I'm afraid I wont even be able to lift it out of the tank!

BTW, what are fish handling gloves? What section of Walmart would they be in?

You are looking at 10kg minimum, i recon

I used a 40" koi sock net when moving my 38" rtc x tsn hybrid. They are a smooth net that holds water in it while you move the fish, and it's open on the end so you just grab the end shut scoop up the fish, and move it to the container, fish, water, and all. Dang, he's gorgeous! Hopefully when I get my 4000 gal finished I can find someone giving away a 30" niger! It's on my dream list!

oh don't worry about lifting, my 38" hybrid is probably as thick as a niger the same size and weighs in at 35 lbs. I lifted him plus about 4 gals of water in a koi sock net. It was a strain, but well worth it.

I wish I could give him to you!

It's ok, I'll probably get a baby in the new year anyway! Hoping also to find a tsn x niger hybrid around then also! Good luck with the move, and when they get him into a display finally post up some pics of him in his new home!
