My Oscars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Very awesome.

Ace Ventura! Yes! I take that as a compliment! Thenx!

I only have one Guinee pig, called Koei, and a black Jaguar, Merlijn.
I used to have Rats, Rabbits, Birds, and other small rodents, before I
narrowed it down to my fish.
I tend to upgrade, and my wish is a GATF. :nilly:

But first a big tank, minimum 400g, in my bedroom.
For my Oscars and friends.

Hey Ollie,

I take my hat off to you in the rescue and rehab of the mistreated Oscar you saved. That was absolutely a great and wonderful thing you have done. An Oscar lover myself, (I have raised 2 from infancy) this Oscar's story broke my heart. Going from a bad situation to an excellent situation.

Koidaddy brought up a really good point: (Just keep an eye on the new one as he feels more established and wants to get territorial.) I started with 4 tiny 1-1/2" Oscars. 2 tiger's and 2 albino's. Put them in a tall 35 gal. (big mistake) but it's all I had at the time. Two weeks later and one more inch of growth for all 4, they all became territorial, so I separated them. I put them into two 55 gal. tanks (2 tigers in one and the albino's in the other). Then they grew up like crazy. All 4 grew to 10" in length over the next 8 months. So, I broke down and bought 2 more 55 gal. tanks and so each one was in their own tank. Then the fun began. Tank hopping. Strange but true it happened. I was cleaning tanks one day, and left one tank open accidently and the second tank I was beginning to clean, well he liked the other tank better as I had just cleaned it. well he just jumped from one to the other and I had to act quickly so as not to harm both fish. I finally got them separated. What a relief it was too.

Another thing I had done to throw some ammusement into this thread, was I had trained my oscars to play volleyball with a pingpong ball, going from one tank to another. Talk about the fun and enjoyment of watching fish. It was a real enjoyable stress breaker for me.

It's been about 12 years now since I have had them. I couldn't find a larger tank to keep them in around my town, so I sold them to other aquqtic nuts like us, when they got to be too big for their 50's. They (all 4) were sold to a gentleman who had a 700 gal. self built tank environment. It was great to see them in with all of the other fish he had. When I sold them to him, they were about 14" long. I really miss them. I may be getting some more soon, but possibly faced with a move in a few weeks and I wait till the move is over to get them.

I thought this would be good for you to read and everyone else, too. Good luck with your Oscars, and again well done on the rescue. :)

Well thank you very much.
Nice stories. Volleyball. I see it happen.

I use hand gestures to communicate with my big O, Solimojes.
The other two I took in when they were already more then one year
old, and they do not interact as much. #4 is too young and does not yet
understand.
But Solimojes does, and the proper introduction of a one and a half year
old tortured newcomer is therefore I recon, more easy.
So I dont feed them at different spots, but direct them while feeding.
And they dont come up to the glass for nothing, only when I call them.
But I feed during the day almost every hour, so they dont connect my
attention to food. Only fun.

Even Maranjon, my latest rescue from whom I chirurgically removed his
lower right lip, and a piece of its chin.
I cant say it anymore bout my pets. Its him, not it. For me it is.

Here are some pics on which you can see his healing:

His chin looks good.

Here you see hes missing right part of his lip:

And Sanema, my albino male, getting bigger and bigger.
His pectoral fins were long, but the RB Pacu..

And the couple is starting again..

I like em naturally:

Lot of my animals were more or less rescues. Almost all the furry ones,
two Bichirs, two Channas, Puffers, Crab, Ctenopomas (Kingsleyae),
Loaches, Catfishes..
And a Ficus Longifolia Alii tree..

It fluctuates, but mainly around 45%
I have several hygrometers throughout the house.
I would like to increase the humidity, so I can keep Green Iguanas. :D
No serious. Free roaming the house.
But my condo on the 4th floor issnt that big. In fact its tiny.
Therefore I cant get it as humid as I like.

Almost all my tanks are open, except Channa, Crab, and Bichir tanks.
I have to refill ~15 liters per day from evaporation.

I want to move to Costa Rica (and trade with the 1.000.000g pond guy).:D

wow:WHOA:, I amazed by your tanks, and good save on the oscars:clap. The biggest suprise is the fact that you can have plants with your oscars. mine always rip them up and carry them around.

Ye I dont see plants and O's together that much.
But of all, Vallisneria Giganthea is the best to keep with O's.

Since the RB Pacu lives in another tank, Also plants like Hygrophila Stricta are thriving.
In a matter of seconds it can all be destroyed tho. :D

I changed the lights. Now there's a 26 and a 13 watt full spectrum
growth eco lamp hanging above the open tank.
Looks more natural:

And I always see the sun. This tank is my :chillpill:

And my proud couple, in the new light:

My freezer with 6 kilos fishfood, the pees are also for the fish.
And its the only freezer I have:

This food isnt treated with any preservatives, and therefor its
more clean than what I buy on the market, labeled as fresh fish.
:screwy:
