My parents aren't understanding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My dad always supportive my mom only got aggrivated when I had a mass of tanks set-up and when the big one came home...but nothing to complain about they love the fish and tanks =]

Well i started out with a 10 gallon i guess when i started serious fish keeping. I always had the 5 gallon or 2gallon throughout my child hood. I bought all my own tanks
55
46
55
55
125
180
210

Then i sold all of them and only have a 180 and a 210 and a 55.

My prize 210 busted a leak and my parents where like thats it we have had it. Your not going to buy a fish tank cause you cant afford a nice new tank. So i convinced them to buy me a 6k 12ft 360 :D. I have to pay the money back though, but it was nice to finance a tank with the parents. They gave me the dinning room too lol, now there is a 12ft fish tank and soon to be a couch just for the fish tank room :D

and now i am working off my car payment and fishtank payment... its quite a bit lol.

I never had to deal with my parents when it came to fish, but when I got older I shared an apartment with my sister, her boyfriend and my girlfriend. Five tanks later and we did not renew the lease. I've since bought a house with a finished basement fish room. Sisters are WORSE than parents.

Me taking out the tape measurer would start an argument before I even said or did anything.

This is my wife's account, but I read here quite often.

My addiction started out at 13. Managed to save my allowance up to purchase a 10g starter kit. Ouch, that was expensive, for a 13 year old. My parents were cool about it. My starter kit had an undergravel filter system, I killed a lot of fish trying to get that tank started up. Once I got it all running and the fish I was interested in were getting too big I decided I needed a bigger tank. So, after much discussion with my parents, I managed to save Christmas money, birthday money, and allowance to get a 55g tank. The local PetCo was switching out all their gravel and gave me two 5 gallon bucket loads of free gravel.

Bought a undergravel filter for it, and about 30 feeder gold fish to get that tank started. Threw my oscar in there, and proceded to collect other cichlids. Learned the hard way that Convicts breed like rats. Pretty soon all I had was about 60 convicts and one Oscar.

Moved away for college, gave my breeding pair of convicts to a friend, the Oscar died from a hernia. Probably from eating too many baby convicts. I even performed an autopsy on him.

Fast forward 12 years. I meet a gal who has a 27g hexagon, my addiction is rekindled. LOL

Now we have the 27g Hex, a 29g BioCube, a 16g Bowfront, and a 100g. Now whenever we go to the LFS, my stepdaughters start rolling their eyes at us. Talk about a reversal of situation. But they also love the fish, and name each one of them.

Her- how much

Me- (insert amount here)

Her- ughhhhh

Me- why are you mad now lol

I still get the fish I want and never regret it :)

Dad- I'll talk to her about it

Normally I try not to announce new fish or tanks as I have very few supporters.

Mom: Why is there this giant tank in the kitchen?
Me: It was on sale.
Mom: Well go put it in the garage or your room or something, I don't want it out here!

Occasionally she will loan me money for a CL fish tank and she likes to look at my fish sometimes though.

At the LFS

Me: I think I want that belonesox
Girlfriend: That fish is stupid, it floats there like it is dead and it looks like some crazy duck bird fish pliers thing.

Occasionally I will get some cute fish to keep her happy.

Me: Hey dad I just got a 40 gallon fish tank!
Dad: What are you going to do when the power goes out/we go to Germany?

For me as a parent, it's not about being not understanding, but more about wanting to make sure that with each pet/fish that is added to the household, that it will be well taken care of...consistently. But it is true, each tank does have a beautiful quality that does grow on you...
this is what i would do if i had kids that had fish. :D
