This is my wife's account, but I read here quite often.
My addiction started out at 13. Managed to save my allowance up to purchase a 10g starter kit. Ouch, that was expensive, for a 13 year old. My parents were cool about it. My starter kit had an undergravel filter system, I killed a lot of fish trying to get that tank started up. Once I got it all running and the fish I was interested in were getting too big I decided I needed a bigger tank. So, after much discussion with my parents, I managed to save Christmas money, birthday money, and allowance to get a 55g tank. The local PetCo was switching out all their gravel and gave me two 5 gallon bucket loads of free gravel.
Bought a undergravel filter for it, and about 30 feeder gold fish to get that tank started. Threw my oscar in there, and proceded to collect other cichlids. Learned the hard way that Convicts breed like rats. Pretty soon all I had was about 60 convicts and one Oscar.
Moved away for college, gave my breeding pair of convicts to a friend, the Oscar died from a hernia. Probably from eating too many baby convicts. I even performed an autopsy on him.
Fast forward 12 years. I meet a gal who has a 27g hexagon, my addiction is rekindled. LOL
Now we have the 27g Hex, a 29g BioCube, a 16g Bowfront, and a 100g. Now whenever we go to the LFS, my stepdaughters start rolling their eyes at us. Talk about a reversal of situation. But they also love the fish, and name each one of them.
