My Room Smells like a Urinal

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Dont drink anything after 7 and set your alarm at about 3 in the morning and get up and use the bathroom and wear pull up dypers at night

IMO you tank is not what is creating the smell of urine. Is the room well ventilated or is the air stagnant? Use baking soda where you spilled water, after drying pour soda on the area then vacuum up the next day. This will help with any odor from the carpet.

I have that same Pulp Fiction poster. Nice setup BTW may want to consider an aro that is a nice tall tank.

C'mon man, know what you are talking about before recommending it to someone else. Arowana in a 4 foot long tank? :duh:

Enough with the stupid bed wetting jokes the first one was funny. You guys are gonna get the thread shut down before we get a chance to help the poor guy.

:ROFL:He has a ray in there I figured the foot print was bigger than that. Your right bad mix. Its only 4 feet... that is an awful footprint unless you got angels or cichlids I guess... OMG someone slap me please its only a 120 DOHHH

All kidding aside (camshaftramrod, I liked yours the best :D ), what are your water parameters? Using carbon to get rid of the smell is just covering up the real source, this is why I will never use carbon unless getting rid of a medication.

Sounds to me like a water quality problem because i have spilled obnoxious amounts of fish water onto carpet floors and never had a problem with smell.

After we get your parameters, providing they are in check, take a damp cloth and clean underneath the plastic rim on the inside of the tank. You know, the part that overhangs the water... I had an interesting (that is the only was I can describe it) smell on one of my tanks and cleaning that off was the only thing that could fix it.

Next, if the above doesnt work, I would suggest getting some of that pet odor, vacuum up baking soda (or just regular baking soda... this stuff smells better) and sprinkle it around the carpet, making sure to vacuum thoroughly.

Next is the fabrics, if the carpet is not the problem, wash anything that can be washed and everything else needs to be smelled.

Last, but not least, if none of the above work to rid your room of the odor, look in vents, behind the stand, etc for anything that could be causing an odor.

My tank often smells after some flake food gets stuck on the edges of the trim or the bottom of the glass cover and starts to rot. But it's not like pee and it's obvious when you open the lid.

If it's not something you smell when you open the tank my guess is that at some point in the past, even years ago, maybe a cat peed in there. Even just a little bit to mark territory. And you may not smell it, and it may not smell every day, but certain days have just the right humidity, or perhaps a splash from the tank does it, where the scent comes out. No matter how much nature's miracle or simple solution we used there were always spots we missed back in my old house which had 3 dogs that all were raised since puppies (and puppies pee, of course). The house before that had a cat from a previous tenant and on humid days we could smell the pee.

This is the kind of thing that makes some people not understand the idea of owning animals. But even at their grossest, they're still worth it.

Get an Ionic Breeze for that room. Having it closed up all the time contributes to the room smelling stale. Mine made a huge difference. You can get one at Walmart for about $150.

I had problems with my "fish room" for several reasons. The big one is humidity. I tackled it with a dehumidifier but that will increase the room temp by ten-ish degrees. I keep the tanks covered and it keeps the humidity down.

My other source was water spills/overflows on the carpet. When the pad "sours", it will hard to get it back to normal. I always keep a towel close by for small spills. For large spills and overflows, you need to use a shop vac to suck the water out of the pad. Renuzit is good for getting the smell out of the carpet around the tank.

Use a mirror to look behind the tank. Dead feeders or chunks of food ejected from the tank can go a long way in the smell department.
