My zoo update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If your ever on this side, look me up.

I'm going to try and set up a MFK group tour sometime in early/mid Feb. I've had several people locally show interest in seeing the ins and outs of tanks like this. Anyone is welcome.

Gah I wish I could see this. Why do I have to be in the wrong country :p Seeing this would be worth the trip...

Also, you mentioned that prior to this you worked on a similar project that was much larger in scale, what project was that???

I worked for several years at the Dallas World Aquarium (ww.dwazoo.com) in Dallas, Texas. I ran the marine side (about 85,000 gallons of salt water in various reef tanks) as well as the freshwater water set ups for the Orinoco display (200,000 River exhibit, 17,000 gallon croc pool, several stingray pools etc...). I was the Sr Aquarist there as well as the lead diver. I also helped build the new Mayan display they opened last year. I did everything from building and running systems to animal husbandry and public talks and feedings.

Yesterday, I got the heating units finally running. We'll have to see if they hold temp now. The room is so dry that I'm loosing about 1-2" of water from both exhibits over night. We have a level sensor hooked directly to the RO machine, so it should stay full once it's all wired up correctly.

Sorry to hear about the mis places fish....the damn airports never care bout stuff like that! One time my fish where held over for the next flight and they shipped MUSHROOMS instead....I was hot and complained! Got my shipping money back

Your exhibit is looking outstanding! :headbang2
Cant wait to see it completely done....It's not often you see any fish exhibits at a zoo....should draw a nice crowd

Thanks. This zoo has been here since 1896 - back when a zoo ment a small metal cage and concrete floor. I swear some of the guests have been coming here since then! It's gonna be great to see them come face to face with my arapaima. It's like nothing else around here. There are two zoos in the Minneapolis / St Paul area. Ours is by far the smaller, but it's 100% free. And with the addition of rare giant stuff like I'm hoping to show, I hope we draw in the regular locals, but also some people - like MFK type fish fanatics. :headbang2

Yes, I've got some, but need to resize them at home. The down side is my home connection is dial up - so loading them from there sucks. I'll try to post some tonight when I get off.

The first pic is of the River display at Dallas. The arapaima in the shot are just over a year old at that point. You'll also see peacock bass, various catfish, leporinus and a slew of river turtles.

Most of the animals in that display will also be featured in the new one I'm working on at Como Zoo. Not as many animals, but same species.

Pic of the arapaima when they first came in...sorry kinda bluury. They are in a 750 gallon pool now and it's hard to see them other than the dark shadows they appear to be.

3 black pacu, 1 red tail cat and a tiger shovel nose. All relatively small at this point.
I also go the silver arowana, but can't get a good shot of them yet.

Enjoy!!
