My zoo update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Zoodiver.
I know we've talked about giving me a behind the scenes tour, and I appreciate it. Unfortunatly things are crazy with my schedule right now and I will have to wait until the exhibit is open. I look forward to seeing it and I will send you a note when I plan on visiting in the near future.

Thanks again!

Looks like we'll be several months behind now. The past two days I've had to totally dump the pools. Today I've started to remove over 4,000 lbs of substrate. (What a pain!)

We're getting set up to tent the entire pool areas in so they can be sand blasted and cleaned. This will remove the paint and the calcium and lime deposites that are showing up. Then the concrete seal will be applied, allowed to cure and then we paint it again. I'm suggesting an epoxy based paint this time. Last time they snuck in and used a lesser quality paint to save money. Most of it has come off just with the water moving across it.

I've taken some pictures to show what I'm talking about. I'll have to resize them at home tonight and post them.

Let this be a lesson to the 'do it yourself' crowd.......do it right the first time. Lost time and labor make this over a $100,000 Oops.

I'd like to be the first to say BAN THAT JACKASS

thank you, that is all

actually, no it's not. I've never been to a site that has so many *******s who post completely assinine things like this. It's a shame because this is a very good site. Oh well. life goes on.

The exhibit is pretty awesome. Dream job you got there!

Today, I got to go step by step with the construction crew on how I wanted the tanks stripped, prepped, sealed and refinished over the next few weeks. We're going to tent in the pools and sand blast the paint off for the first step. We're also taking this opertunity to fix some of the cracks and misc odds and ends that showed up since the pools were made.

Not the best situtation, but at least it's being done correctly. I'm happy about that. I would hate to see the animals suffer just to save money. The "powers that be" said I get final word on everything this time. Hopefully, we can have it back on track soon. Other zoos I've talked to who ran into this said it set them back as much as 15 months. I hope to hammer this out and get back on line a lot sooner then that. My fish will all have out grown the holding area by then!

wow, that set up is nice.

sorry to hear all the trouble you've been having, but just hang in there, once it is done, you can step back and look at what you created and it will be all worth while. Keep us posted.

one day if i am ever up in mn, i will definately hit you up for a behind the scene look.

Great Work Zoodiver. I'm sure all of your input and hardwork will pay off! Now all I need to do is win the 136million lottery to do a similar set-up.
