Add 2 new tablespoons tomorrow, after the w change.

Ok now im really lost

making a water test 45 minutes after adding the salt, no i got an ammonia presence, its on the lower scale but this is after 10 days of checking the water bi-daily with zero readings on both ammonia and nitrites

nitrites are zero but ammonia came up to be 0.4 mg/litre

this must have been caused by the salt somehow

No. Not the salt.

Your tank is uncycled.

Do you have a friend or trusted LFS you can get chcled media for your filter?

And be aware that the higher the Ph is ( yours at 8 is tottally unsuitable for an RTC ) the more toxic ammonia is.

My tank has undergone a cycle that lasted 5 weeks one month ago, with a couple of cichlids.

and i used media from my big canister filter thats on my bigger tank

its not a matter of cycle

Why do you have ammonia Pankoi?

Do you have ammonia in your tap water?

Try and lower that ph, at least. Small water changes every day. 10%. Maintain the tank warm and oxygenated.

an update of things

woke up this morning and ammonia was there at the same level.

i did a 20% water change vacuuming the bottom.

good news is that white spots seem to start going away. it seems that adding the salt last night did well.

now im concern about the ammonia levels, i still cant figure out why is ammonia present. my tap water does not have ammonia but it does have a ph of 8.

I decided to do all that it takes to save this guy so i took one of the canister filters that were set up in my 700l tank and put it in the 20 g tank. 40 minutes later before leaving for work, ammonia was barely present. i hope by evening today it will be totally gone.

so now i have a 1200l/hour fully matured filter processing the water in the small tank.

Since the white spots are starting to go away it seems that if i fight ammonia he is going to make it.

i dont have any clue as to how to keep the ph lower though

I said the fish will look worse before it got better so hopfully you turned the corner on this and and the fish is on the mend. Keep the temp up and the air running for the next few days.

As far as your Ph goes it might be what you have and in this case it's better to live with it than to try to change it. Have you tested you tap water? You sould test it so you have a base line and you will know what your putting into the tank when you do a water change. Some drift wood in the tank will help as the release of tannic acid will lower the Ph some over time. Ammonia is more toxic at higher Ph levels so going foward it will be important to keep up with several small water changes a week this will help the tank remain stable and reduce the amoutn of waste build up, in addition regular filter maintance is required but always rinse everything in a bucket of tank water so you don't wipe out your bio-filter which will cause you tank to re-cycle.

Once treatment is complete gradually lower the temp back to normal and reduce the salt level with water changes.

I never used this product but APi sells something called ph down, ph up, ph neutral so you could look into that to stabilize your Ph just a thought

i tested my tap water ph and it has been always at this level,

i believe i should not try and mess with it. it has been like this in all my tanks all the time.

i just hope that if the rtc gets out of it ok, it will go well with this ph level.

anyone had experience with rtc's and high ph?????
