I have a 90 gallon with small tropicals in it. A few months ago, I brought home some new fish (a couple tetras, a gold nugget pleco ,and a couple barbs). There is/ was a couple bala sharks, TF barbs, platties, and synos. in there as well. Well, I didn't quarintene, because I trusted the LFS I have been going to for years. Guess what. There was some kind of fungal outbreak the next day that wiped out half of the tank. I treated it with melafix and pimafix, and there were some survivors. The same thing has come back twice, and I have been treating it the same way every time. This time, I have lost 3 fish so far and one of the synos. is in rough shape. He has bare spots in his skin where his fins lay against his body. In his "armpits" (pec. fins) and under his anal fins is all raw. It looks like the skin is all rubbed off and the white meat is exposed. What can I do? Is the melafix/ pimafix too strong for cats? Any suggestions? Also, any suggestions on how to keep the fungus from coming back again?

Jungle's fungus eliminator is an effective tank treatment for true fungal infections. It kills off any spores that might be remaining in your tank. BigAlsOnline carries it. Binox is also effective. As to preventing future problems and speeding healing anything that encourages slime coat production will help. Salt at 1TBSP/5gal will help. Melafix won't hurt.

I haven't tried the jungle fungus thing yet. My wife took the syno to work today to do a fungal and bacterial culture on him. I should know what it is for sure on Monday. Thanks for the help.

i have the thought that you overdosed.. with those meds .. you should only use the meds for a few days and then rely on water changes.. give a big water 50% change now and add a very mild {small amount}aquariam salt solution to relieve stress and do not put any more medicine.. i hope he will be okay.

we brought a fungal infection home from an LFS a few weeks ago.. didn't show up until we moved the fish out of the quarantine tank (wasn't there long enough, i got antsy). We treated both tanks with salt and raised the temp to 88 degrees.

treated it the same as we did ich, salt 1 tsp per gallon, and raised the temps, then weekly water changes after 10 days and gradually reduce the temp 2 degrees per week till it's back down around 82 - 84 degrees.

the same thing has worked for ich and a couple different fungus outbreaks (in different tanks) and i haven't lost a fish.
