It's true they don't have the flow of an FX5, but they are very comparable to the Eheims. If you use the parts that come with it you can just unscrew the top on the inlet side and pour water down it to fill. I usually clean out the filter, leave it empty and then pop the front 2 tabs to prime it. Takes about 10 seconds.

i do that but for some reason mine just wont ever prime...i have to keep pouring water down the intake till the whole canister fills....it is such a pain...i've followed the manual word for word and countless other how to do maintanence stuff and it never primes itself...

mabye you just don't set them up right
canister filters are amazing if you follow the directions and saftey precautions

if you don't, you could end up in a very bad situation

The first problem you are having is that you are setting up the filter wrong. You are supposed to have the latch in the open position when filling the lines. Once the lines are filled, you place the cap on and then close the latch. This creates a siphon and fills your canister.

Could not of said it better myself and the instructions mention this as well. Part of the problem people have with Renas is they pack them too tight. DO NOT use the "micro polishing pad on top" method. IMO, it's a marketing ploy and will lead to clogging very quickly. I use Koi Pond polishing pads. They are more coarse and work perfect. I've had 4 Renas for 2 years and never an issue. And with any cannister filter you should be cleaning the hoses at least 2 times a year. It's easy.

Also, don't turn the filter on till it's full.
Then let'r rip

aside from FX5's I think these are the best filters out there (IMO)

yep exactly, must not have read directions to hard :wall::wall::wall::eek:

never had a problem with mine. it works perfect and for the price, i can't complain

I love my twin XP3's too.

not sure why you had trouble priming them.

they are self priming. with the hoses full of water, fill up the canister with water, put the hoses back on via the aquastop and plug it in.

alternatively as mentioned, you can let the hoses do the filling part all by themselves if you want, but I fast track and fill up the canister body ahead of time.

plug it in and it goes like hell.

its that simple.

have faith. they are great filters.

I've never had trouble priming them. Set up is easy, actually.

I just find that they need to be cleaned more often than Eheim's or Fluval. Mine gave me perhaps three months of pleasure and have gotten progressively slower since then.

i had my xp4 and my fx5 hooked up to my 210 and it works beautifully never had a problem with them, the are easy to use and do a good job

okay so leave the lever down then?
