New 125 all male peacock and Hap tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I personally am not a fan of randomly using chemicals to dose a tank. Especially if I am not sure what is going on with the fish. But at the same time I don’t want to say don’t use it and have you lose a week of treatment.

Ok thanks, I will wait til Monday and if he is still not eating, then I will dose the tank.

Usually my fish eat after 2 days but I've seen up to a week, bigger and older fish tend to be more nervous from what I've experienced for both aquarium fish and in the wild. He may be getting settled in like others mentioned.
After a few days I throw some type of treat in like blood worms, market shrimp or brine shrimp. It should eat blood worms if it dosnt have a parasites.

I don’t have any blood worms, I only have NLS pellet and some flakes for my salt water tanks. I do have frozen prawns, should I cut it up into small pieces and try fitting them?

How small should I cut it?

thanks

Gill Flukes cause fish to Flash & the fish will eventually display flared red gills.
I've only dealt with flukes once, in a Discus tank. "Formalin" cleared up the problem in about a week. Note: Formalin is a very harsh med & I wouldn't recommend it if other effective meds are available.
Unless the potentially sick Hap is exhibiting the above listed symptoms, likely not Flukes.

I do see some fish flash once in a while, maybe once in a hour or even less. But I keep hearing it’s normal that Cichlid sometimes just do that. if it’s fluke, how bad would be the flashing?

I don’t see any white spot either. There are some damaged fins due to the fighting from day one but nothing major.

I did maybe see some white feace from the Mylochromis but most have already fell off and only had a little bit still attached.

i will continue to monitor closely. Should I add aquarium salt? I read it can help.

also, can both aquarium salt and Epsom salt be added at the same time?

thanks

Sometimes Cichlids randomly flash due to territorial reasons. Sort of like a gorilla beating his chest. Flashing immediately after a water change often indicates water chemistry differences between the old & new.
Constant, Non-stop flashing indicate exterior parasites.
I'm not a big fan of adding salt to a fresh water tank. All salt does is improve the slime coat of a fish. Seachem's StressGuard does that. I've never used epsom salt either, but most recommended using it as baths to relieve constipation.

Ok thanks, I do notice most of the time the flash comes right after the fish is been chased, so that’s probably it.

For the shrimp or prawns you can just cut it into the smallest you can get, they will chew on it for a while. I feed 3 mm NLS 5 nights a week, then shrimp the night before my water change, then I dont feed them the night of my water change. I like to think the shrimp helps improve color but honestly I just like watching them attack the shrimp pieces.

And yes they will flash when they have glue flukes and as a territorial thing. If they do a little shake after they flash it means its territorial. And generally they do it to kick up sand and make a scene.

And I use epson salt, Pickling salt and baking soda every water change to adjust water hardness and Ph. If your salinity or hardness is low they will flash as well.
