New Beast

I have never seen a Diamond bigger than 13" in this country. I have had my Black Diamond for a year almost. I imported it last year at 10", I haven't measured it again as size doesn't really bother me I love the way they look.
Another person I know has had good growth rates out of his Diamond. It was 8" and now its sitting almost on 10" in a year! The growth rate will start to slow down from now though.
Your lucky having good water where you are. Must be the fields around here that makes the water so crap!
I talk to a lot of UK piranha owners everyday and always pick up something new. So what meds are you using to worm the rhom?

at the moment i havnt decided which medication to use. i was only planning on starting once he got in his new tank.... but i may start early as its a deffo for a 5x2x2ft tank in summer
i have spoke to the fella at the lfs and he can get me some, he said it has something to do with horse worm. i think he means something to do with horse worm plays a part in the medication for the type of worm fish get
i will let you know what i decide to use

bye bye
jump on my thread just to argue a point with me, not once did u even comment on the fish in question.
oh and sorry i didnt realise i had to spell everything out to you either. what i should have said was i dont treat for parasites in GENERAL, i have never needed too, i treat for specific ones, i dont even need to with this rhom, but i will to help his growth
No I agree with him too. U r living in a fantasy world. Where are gettin your information thinking that your rhom will be 16 inches. Have you ever even seen a diamond rhom that is 16 inches. The ones that are big are imported that big. They only grow that big in the wild normally. I am sure there are people who have grown big rhoms but it has taken them many many years not a miracle treatment for worms!

^^^ blah blah
thing is very few rhom owners actually know they are prone to worm and treat them for worm on a regular basis, coz they will get it back.
i cant say for sure, and i havnt once said he will deffo hit 16" but i will give him everything he needs to stand the best chance of doing so

i would have much respect if you just backed off a bit and said that you wanna give your rhom a good home and hope that he grows to a decent size. i think your rhom looks nice and its got a lot of potential, but realistically, he won't get past 12", and that's being generous. when you say that most people don't treat for worms, i think that you are makng a generalization and not taking into account the serious keepers that are out there, and believe me, we are out there in large numbers. there's no reason to get so defensive about things, i just don't want you putting information out there that others will read and take as fact, because they definitely are not fact. if you somehow grow your rhom past 12" in captivity, document your progress, write an article, and gain some respect in this hobby. in the meantime, check out opefe, take care of that nice lookin rhom that you have, and learn as much as you possibly can... that's the best chance that you have to turn that rhom into a monster.

ok no hard feelings, and thanks for ur comments on the new rhom.
when i say worms, i dont mean anchor worm or anything like that i mean internal worm like ring worm etc...
basicly as far as worming goes, im not making out its a miracle solution to grow them big, but its a BIG help and important to do to stand any chance of getting a good size out of the fish while in an aquarium.
thing is..... its a little known fact that rhom get internal worms in the aquarium, and when i say they get them, i mean they get them, and they will get them back even after treatment, within 6 months.
next problem, most parasite and worming treatments (strong powerfull ones) are not suitable for piranha. (just look on the back of the box/bottle)
there is only one strong treatment for worms that i know of that is safe to use with piranha.
so basicly all i have been trying to explain is, rhoms get worm, rhoms grow slow, a rhom with worm grows even sloooooower, so remove the worm problem regularly to get better growth rates

i'll definitely agree with you on that, in fact, most medicines are extremely hard on piranhas and characins in general. because of this fact, i always zero in on exactly what is wrong with my piranhas before i start dumping meds in the tank, which has only happened once or twice. the only general parasite treatment that i use is prazipro, and i have nothing but good things to say about it, because it works great.

yes i have heard good things about that Prazipro, cant seem to find it over here tho. i have ordered some Paragon from my lfs today, which is what people use to treat worms in fish like discus. apparently it is a very strong and effective way to rid fish of internal worms, and the biggest plus is that it is piranha safe:D
i will be dosing him twice maybe 3 times a year with this stuff to make sure he has no worms to hinder his growth

nice diamond, biggest i know of in captivity is 14in and it was brought in at that size , i have a Peru thats now 13in after 3.5 years from 10.5in with powerheads, zero nitrate , plenty of water changes and prazipro , and its now just getting fatter not longer, they dont get worming treatment in the wild where they grow bigger than in captivity so i cant see the worming makes much if any difference. the most growth rate ive heard of on a rhom was 8-12 ins that took 6 years and it hasnt got any bigger after 8 years total
